January 30, 200818 yr Author Here's some more: You don't have to wear a watch because it doesn't matter what time it is.You work until you're done or it's too dark to see. You don't PUSH bottons, you MASH them. You measure distance in minutes. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked. There are only four spices:salt, pepper.tabasco and ketchup. The first day of deer season is a national holiday. We have four seasons:Almost Summer,Summer, still Summer and Christmas. A carbonated soft drink isn't a soda, cola or pop...it's a Coke, regardless of brand or flavor.Example:"What kinda coke you want?"
January 30, 200818 yr Something that drives me nuts, is "Ambulance Drivers". It is a personal thing, but I hate it when people call me an ambulance driver. I went to college and have an intense knowledge of medicine. I can diagnose medical conditions and treat those conditions, I can start IV's give many medicine, shock your heart back into rhythm, read EKG's and tell you when you are having a heart attack, put large tubes in you lungs, put tubes into your airway and breath for you. Trust me, I am much more then an ambulance driver. If you really want someone to look at you like are nuts. When someone says ambulance driver, say "wait the police car driver and the fire truck driver will be here in a minute", that is what I say when people call me an ambulance driver. People just don't get it. What I would call you is wonderful!!!!! Since my Mom has been sick I have had to talk to quite a few "Ambulance Drivers":D and I have to tell you that they have all be very professional, very capable and very very kind to both my mom and myself. So whenever someone calls you an "ambulance driver" and truly mean that phrase, please think of me and know that I respect and admire what you do. Now onto what I have learned by living in Kentucky..... We call it a buggy.....grab a buggy, move that buggy, stop bumping into my buggy:lol: My family has always called a trunk a boot...yes a boot...I don't know why but that's always been what we call it. Trust me, my husband still laughs himself silly everytime I say it. We have never called it a pop or a soda...we call it a coke. When I say coke I mean I want a pepsi.:thumb: I will admit that I say, I am fixing to fix supper. I am fixing to run to wal-mart. I know.....I try not to say it but it just pops out. Dinner is lunch and supper is dinner. I have learned that there are some people from the north who do not appreicate gravy. How can that be?????? When they do get a biscuit and put some gravy on it (under protest - I am talking about my husband) they just put a small amount of gravy on the biscuit and this drives me crazy. I have finally told him that he is never to waste good gravy on a good biscuit. So now he watches in wonder when I throw as much gravy as I can on my biscuit.
January 30, 200818 yr In Ky the word "hit" isn't just a verb anymore! It's now a noun too. Example: Where did you put the plate? I put "hit" back in the cabinet.

January 30, 200818 yr Another "Kyism" Using the word "kindly" vs two words "kind of" Example: Do you want to go with us? I "kindly" do, but I can't. Another: I "kindly" like candy.
January 30, 200818 yr We have never called it a pop or a soda...we call it a coke. When I say coke I mean I want a pepsi.:thumb: D It was not uncommon in our household to hear the following: Hey, can you get me a coke while you're up? Sure. What kind? I don't know. Pepsi or Sprite - doesn't matter.
January 30, 200818 yr You Northern Kentucky people have never heard of "hot dog sauce" either. One of the funniest things that I have ever witnessed was, at a playoff game at Raceland, while playing a Northern Kentucky team, I was standing behind a fan from the opposing team at the concession stand. The person taking orders asked if she could help the lady. The lady replied that she would like a hot dog. The concession stand worker then asked if she would like the hot dog with sauce. The Norther lady asked, what? . You're busted. It could not have been someone from NKY because if it was they would have replied: Please?
January 30, 200818 yr Two things that kinda drive me crazy: "That is a good ideal", instead of "That is a good Idea". Chimaly, instead of chimney.
January 30, 200818 yr You're busted. It could not have been someone from NKY because if it was they would have replied: Please? :thumb:You may be right, I could hear her saying "please", I was using "What" as a descriptive term to illustrate her disbelief. But, it was five or six years ago, so she could have said "Please". But, still the funniest conversation I have ever heard.
January 31, 200818 yr I've learned that in Ky when you take something out of the freezer you "unthaw" it. I thought that meant you were putting it INTO the freezer.
January 31, 200818 yr I've learned that, at least in Pike County, some folks cover their biscuits with chocolate gravy. I've learned that a fur piece is a long distance; not a ladies' accessory. My wife, who is from Greenup County, calls shopping carts buggies. I cannot bring myself to call them "bascarts", which is how they're labeled at Kroger. I've learned that a toboggan is headwear, not a sled. I've learned that "a right smart" is a pretty decent amount. I've learned that "tore up" means emotionally overwraught; not shredded to pieces.
January 31, 200818 yr I'm from the hills, Johnson County to be exact... here are some I didnt see. - Any law enforcement agency is called "the law" Ex - They called the law on me for shooting my gun to close to my house. - Any type of drink is called "pop" - When you are telling somebody where somebody else lives... it's "there from over on..." - Everybody seems to be related. - When your telling somebody who you are, your not you... so&so is your grandparents.
January 31, 200818 yr Buggy? You all have never heard of the buggy? "Put that in the buggy." "Stop, you are going to fall out of the buggy." "Yuck! Don't put your mouth on the buggy!" Buggies Unlimited.. I mean seriously.

January 31, 200818 yr Two things that kinda drive me crazy: "That is a good ideal", instead of "That is a good Idea". Chimaly, instead of chimney. I've heard people in my area say "dreen" istead of "drain". As in, "You need to put new dreen pipes on that house." Or, "That car's radiator needs to be dreened' Aso, my roommate in college was from Michigan. We were eating at a country diner one day and I ordered soup beans with my meal. When I got my food he said, "Man, I wish I'd ordered that. I love bean soup." Evidently pinto beans are 'bean soup' in Michigan and 'soup beans' in Kentucky.
