January 31, 200818 yr I have been to all areas of this state and have never heard a shopping cart called a "buggy". I have also never heard of "hot dog sauce". However, since my mom is from Detroit, I probably wasn't exposed to as many Kyism's growing up as I might have been otherwise. For example, if I ask for a coke, I mean a Coke (not a Pepsi). I don't mean "any carbonated soda will do". Some Kyism's I have noticed: Camouflage is a primary color. There is a good chance someone might give you directions to the "libary". It's not uncommon to hear the following, "I'm going to get some beer. I'll be back in a couple hours."
January 31, 200818 yr I have also never heard of "hot dog sauce". I bet you have never had a hot dog with "Sauce" and cole slaw either. Man you are missing out.
January 31, 200818 yr I bet you have never had a hot dog with "Sauce" and cole slaw either. Man you are missing out. I have heard of this (and actually had a few) but they were given to me as "West Virginia Hot Dogs". I've never heard a shopping cart called a buggy.
January 31, 200818 yr Go to any grocery store and you will find canned hot dog sauce on the canned meat aisle. Some brands called it hot dog chili or chili sauce, but most are hot dog sauce. During college, I worked for Kroger and spent plenty of time pushing buggies and stocking pop.
January 31, 200818 yr You Northern Kentucky people have never heard of "hot dog sauce" either. One of the funniest things that I have ever witnessed was, at a playoff game at Raceland, while playing a Northern Kentucky team, I was standing behind a fan from the opposing team at the concession stand. The person taking orders asked if she could help the lady. The lady replied that she would like a hot dog. The concession stand worker then asked if she would like the hot dog with sauce. The Norther lady asked, what? The conversation went on for several minutes. The concession stand lady was trying to explain what hot dog sauce was, saying it was a meat sauce that you put on hot dogs. And the Northern lady kept saying why would I want that on my hot dog. After the lady got her sauceless hot dog and walked away, and it was my turn at the window, I told the concession stand worker that in Northern Kentucky it not called hot dog sauce, it is called chili. Funny stuff. I have ran into the same thing. I don't really call that stuf they serve chili either so I guess we are even.
January 31, 200818 yr I bet you have never had a hot dog with "Sauce" and cole slaw either. Man you are missing out. I've had chili dogs and I have also had cole slaw served on a BBQ pork sandwich which is good.
January 31, 200818 yr I've had chili dogs and I have also had cole slaw served on a BBQ pork sandwich which is good. There is hope for you then. Next time it is available, try a hot dog with sauce and slaw, if you liked the BBQ, you will like it.
January 31, 200818 yr Where I'm from we push buggys at the Walmart. Drink pops and cokes (as well as some other things). And not only do possums live in the middle of the road, so do polecats. :thumb: Also, You want caviar? Where I'm from we call it bait and you can get it at a place called the bait shop along with some minners. We live in hollers, not hollows. :thumb: As I have already said, I don't know what that stuff they serve in NKY and Cincy is exactly but it dang sure ain't our hot dog sauce or chili . Yes I have pushed a buggy in a grocery store and at a Wal Mart and enjoy a bottle of pop at times while I am doing this. I may be at anytime of day fixing myself a Ky. Steak sammich...know in other places as bologna (by the way, I have yet to know why the spelling is bologna and you pronounce it baloney:confused:) Just some pointers that may help new residents, tourist and other uneducated folk. Y'all have a good un':thumb:
January 31, 200818 yr For some reason Wal-Mart developed an "S". Every time I hear directions, they say, " Turn at the Wal-Marts and go about a mile". This also works for K Marts, Krogers, and virtually every other store.
January 31, 200818 yr I hear "Wal-Mark" quite a bit. I don't see how you can put a "k" at the end, but people do.
January 31, 200818 yr A college buddy of mine from OH was snacking on a box of Cheez-Its when one of our local KY guys thinking they might be a bit stale asked, "Are those any count" The Buckeye looked curiously at the box and answered, "I dont have any idea how many there are" Ram, that was perhaps the funniest conversation I ever heard.......
January 31, 200818 yr Things i have learned The left lane is for faster moving traffic. In all seriousness Ohio drivers need to learn this. It drives me insane.
January 31, 200818 yr Growing up I had a neighbor lady refer to a brown paper bag as a "poke". My in-laws "wretch" right up and get an apple off the tree. They also fish in a crick, instead of a creek. In college, a roommate laughed when I pronounced 'Arnett' as R-Net instead of Rnit. Evidently there is a difference in the pronunciation based on how wealthy that particular family is. Don't forget iron is arn...you know. IRONTON, OH or arnton, oh. And my dad, who was born and raised in Ironton, called a piano a Pie-ano. (long I).
