Just like the old saying goes there is no I in team. Who's to say when its all said and done that this team won't have more talent. Even thought his team is lead by seniors Henderson, Avery, Nelson, & Clark some of thier best talent is only soph's - Pittman, Johnson bros. to name a few. So it will have to play out for a couple of more years to see which team had more talent and in saying that how do we judge that talent? Do we see which team had more players go and play at higher levels in college or what?

I have been following Holmes(not to show my age) since 1977. This team reminds me of the earlier years. Where they had amazing defense, run-run-run or pull up, set up the offense if need be. Have not seen the discipline like this for years. They are lacking one thing :confused: anyone care to guess?

The dog pound will come out at tourney time. I was at the region semi's and finals last year and have made the trip to Lexington the past two trips and Holmes seemed to have plenty of fan support. I know of a lot of programs this day and time that the support only rolls out come tourney time. Back when I played in the early 80"s the gyms were always full. That just does not seem to be the case this day and time with some exceptions i.e. Cov Cath.

All I remeber was at Holmes last year during the region finals it was packed to the rafters and hot as heck in that gym.

I know this is not the thread for this discussion, so this will be my last post about it. I totally understand the team play this year, but last year's Bulldogs would be at least a 6 point favorite against this year's team.

Ah yes, remember those days well. Had to get there very early for the JV game if you wanted to get a seat for the Varsity. And if you were lucky to get one next to the little windows you could open in the upper deck, that was sweet. Remember the year Doug Schloemer hit the controversial shot against Newport to put them in Louisville? Of course back then we called them "bulldogs". They were pretty good prior to '75 as well. Class of 1975 myself. Sorry to ramble on..

I think the reason that Holmes finally made that big run at the end of the season is it sure seemed like something finally got to them that they couldn't do it individually. They played their best ball when they played together.

Why is it that Coach Henley is rarely mentioned in the state's top coaches threads. From what I have seen and read, he seems very deserving.

Not bold at all. This year's Team has just as good of a shot as last years. And if you don't think this Team is more disiplined, and plays better as a Team, just ask their Coach.

 

This team is more disciplined but simply not as talented. Both teams were/are very, very good. This one has a shot at winning for years, but put them head to head and I will take last year's team.

 

And I disagree that they have as good a shot as last years, and the only reason they would is because the path to the semi's will be much easier than last years.

Last year's team might have been more talented... But this '08 team has a much better chance to win at all. Here are all the reasons I believe this is true:

 

--The top contenders for the sweet 16 have come back to the field. I think we can all agree that Scott County was one of the best teams this state has seen for many, many years. I mean, they beat Huntington while they were number 1 in the Nation for pete's sake. Let's not forget that 3 of the top 5 teams in the state come from Region 11 (Lex Cath, Bryan Station and Scott County). Two of those big boys will be gone before the Sweet 16.

 

--Defense Yes, I know Holmes played great D last year as well. I watched them from the 9th Region all the way thru the semis and they played unbelievable half court man to man. The problem last year was that they were only 7 deep at best and couldn't extend the defense. Now they go 10-11 deep and pickup full court man. Teams have to work incredibly hard just to get into their sets now. Whereas last year, they would be able to walk it up the floor. An off night can still be an easy win when you can guard like this team does.

 

--Discipline I watched Duran Jefferson curse out his entire coaching staff after he fouled out early in the second half of the Scott County game. Which was especially sad, since his last two fouls were a combined 150 feet from the basket. You won't see these types of things from this year's team. Arrez is the leader of this team and sets a great example from his work ethic and respect for the coaches. Ryan Ernst used the headline "Henderson and Company" earlier this season. I was told by a member of the Holmes staff that this couldn't have been stated better.

 

--Unselfishness I honestly believe Arrez could score 2 points and be happy as long as he played great D and his team won. The entire team feeds off of this. You rarely see this type of unselfishness at this level. Henley and his staff have this team programmed to think about guarding their man first. This translates to the offensive end because the Bulldogs only take whats given to them. They do not force shots. If anything, they pass too much at times.

 

I just hope that Holmes can knock off CovCath in the 9th Region Final. CovCath always finds a way to give Holmes a good game and I expect another close one in March. After that, it will all depend on the draw. If Mason and Holmes are on opposite sides of the bracket... I could see them in the State Championship.

 

I am a Holmes grad and I may be a little crazy... But I really feel this is the best shot Holmes has had at a title since '90.

They also were very good 79-80. Lost in the state semi's in 1980 with Dicky Beal.

Why is Holmes even playing teams like this? I know it's a tournament but wouldn't the 6th best team in the state be in a tournament with a little stronger competition?

I understand to an extent, but that was the first thought that went through my mind.

I'm not so sure about that. I think this team has a future high level D1 player and Henderson will either play at NKU or a D1 school.
