February 2, 200818 yr I am for the split--not because of recruiting (yes, publics do it too)--but because publics and privates are different in every sense of the word. When you must deal with all populations (rich, poor, regular ed, special needs, ESL, etc.) regardless of choice, it is just different. As far as all populations, you might be suprised how many students fit into the Poor, special needs, ESL categories in private schools as well. The percentages may not be equal, but it's not like all private schools deal with absolutley none of those types of students.
February 2, 200818 yr The majority of the people are for a split state wide. I hear it every night at a game somewhere, people talking about the split. What really threw me for a loop, I actually heard some private school coaches saying that they might welcome the idea.:scared: I was stunned to say the least. They just said that if the publics wanted to split so bad, they( the KHSAA) should just go ahead and do it. They were of the opinion that the split faction was not gonna stop till it was done. I agreed with them, they will not stop. To many are for the split. Jesse, if there is a split, then I'm with those coaches that say go ahead and do it. I'm not sure exactly what type of split your conversants are speaking of...total split, partial split, etc. I'm not for a split at all, but if it is to be, then let's do it. Let's get this behind us, and the private schools can get on with planning their futures. Face it...among most public schools, not much is going to change. But for private schools, the potential changes are pretty significant, especially if it's a total split. And if a split does occur, please forgive me if my bitterness leads me back to this forum someday to say "I told you so" to those who felt that a split was the only answer to the perceived unlevel playing field, and nothing has changed except a few rivals were eliminated from the field.
February 3, 200818 yr Why would things change so much for the privates--other than they would have their own tournament? It doesn't mean that the schools could never play each other again if they so choose. Are you implying that you would no longer be under the jurisdiction of KHSAA?
February 3, 200818 yr Are you implying that you would no longer be under the jurisdiction of KHSAA?Why should they be? What advantage would it have for them? If the KHSAA wants a split, it's see ya' later buddy.

It doesn't mean that the schools could never play each other again if they so choose. Are you implying that you would no longer be under the jurisdiction of KHSAA? As has been stated many, many times the private schools can't leave the KHSAA because most states have rules in place that they can compete against only schools that are members of a state's association that is part of the NFHS, in Kentucky that's KHSAA. That's why Kentucky schools can no longer games against teams like Oak Hill Academy. What I see happening if a splint occurs is that the private schools would have a separate BOC and would make their own rules, just like the different divisions in the NCAA. I would them bet that among the first changes would be abolishing the rules against recruiting and scholarships.

February 3, 200818 yr What do you mean things wouldn't change? For whom? I think what he means is that a private public split into divisions would be similar for football going from 4 to 6 divisions. It only would affect the postseason. Doesn't have to effect anything else.

Doesn't have to effect anything else. In other words, the publics will bestow some sort favor upon us by playing us as long as there's no championship involved? I've got a word for that... And how in the HECK does one think that a private division championship could ever work in Kentucky? Trinity & X will battle each other every year for the Championship. Might as well move the annual game to December. And....again....they say it won't change anything....but it most certainly will. And...again....forgive me if I come back when/if this happens and tell the same people so adamant "I told you so" when you have a handful of public schools winning all the championships.

So, the Trinity fans clamoring for a Rocks-Bluebirds matchup is trying to bestow some sort of favor on Highlands by playing them with no championship involved? And I cannot speak for everyone but with me, it is about setting up teams playing like type schools and not setting it up to determine who is going to win the championship. And for the record while the team that you support may have a successful season ONLY IF they win the state championship, that is a rarity in this state. There are many, many, many schools that making the playoffs is a successful season. Winning the first game is a successful season. Success is NOT and should NOT be measured ONLY by winning a state championship. In fact, a team could win a state championship title and if the young men have not grown as individuals, that season is a failure.

And...again....forgive me if I come back when/if this happens and tell the same people so adamant "I told you so" when you have a handful of public schools winning all the championships. No, I think you're more likely to find that handful of public schools wanting to join the private association. Then the KHSAA's public school "everyone wins a trophy" association will be a nationwide joke.
February 4, 200818 yr And I cannot speak for everyone but with me, it is about setting up teams playing like type schools and not setting it up to determine who is going to win the championship. No, it's about winning a meaningless trophy that you (as a team) don't deserve. Simple as that. Success is NOT and should NOT be measured ONLY by winning a state championship. And there's the difference.
February 4, 200818 yr So, the Trinity fans clamoring for a Rocks-Bluebirds matchup is trying to bestow some sort of favor on Highlands by playing them with no championship involved? Of course not! It's about playing the best! Maybe you have something there. But to me, that's like saying you don't try for an A, because a B is pretty good. And, seriously, the clammor for a split is about championships. And when the same few public schools become the new dominant, evil empire....what then? Success is NOT and should NOT be measured ONLY by winning a state championship. In fact, a team could win a state championship title and if the young men have not grown as individuals, that season is a failure. Then, I'm doubly, no TRIPLY proud to say that I support Trinity...where we win championships, and our SCHOOL COMMUNITY produces some of the finest young men anywhere.
February 4, 200818 yr According to this cartoon the KHSAA is selling state titles. This appears to be a slap in the face to the KHSAA. Maybe the focus should not be on the privates but the KHSAA.
February 4, 200818 yr No, it's about winning a meaningless trophy that you (as a team) don't deserve. Simple as that. And there's the difference. I guess you feel like Ryle was a failure when they lost in the championship game. So, you think a school that might not have ever had a winning season but this one year has a magical run and makes the playoffs and then evens wins a game has had a failure of the year because they didn't bring home a state tournament trophy to put in the trophy case and stroke the adult's egos? That is the attitude that has ruined sports. The Al Davis, just win baby. Where the true measure of success in HS athletics is the quality individuals it puts out and NOT the championships it wins. You need to read the story in the HL on Sunday about the IUPUI coach who will be forgoing the July college recruiting season so that he can travel to Africa and deliver the shoes that he has accumulated this season. Like he said, if at the end of his career all he has done in win games, than it has not been as great of a college coaching career as it could have been. Then, I'm doubly, no TRIPLY proud to say that I support Trinity...where we win championships, and our SCHOOL COMMUNITY produces some of the finest young men anywhere. And please know I did not mean to suggest otherwise. I truly believe that you do both as well as other schools do.:thumb:
