Don't confuse scholarship and finacial aid. Private schools cannot offer a full ride tuition scholarship to a student based upon thier athletic prowess. Any belief in that is totally wrong.

 

What does that have to do with anything. I can't get a scholarship for tuition in a public school. So don't go there.

 

Every student in your district gets a full ride scholarship (athlete or non-athlete) to the schools in thier district, funded by the taxpayers- including those who have no kids, or have thier kids in a differrent system. You could get that free ride to another districts school, if your district and that district have the reciprical agreement. If there is no agreement, you must pay tuition. That issue is between your district and the other district. They have made the decision to do that , and other districts around the state have made different ones. And here is the thing. Lets say that the other district(Corbin) did out of the goodness of thier hearts, offer need-based tuition, and some merit based scholarships to offset the cost you would have to pay in tuition. One thing that they could not do is offer a scholarship based on athletics to cover that tuition (something it seems you claim-wrongly-that private schools do). It is in violation of KHSAA bylaws, and if any school did this, they should be punished.

I was with you until the last paragraph as I do think those "advantages" can be changed. I wish the public administrators, rather than pushing for a split, would take your above observations to a meeting of all parents of kids attending the public schools and say look: "if you want your kids to be as successful on the field and in the classroom as the kids at the private schools are, then you need to start doing the things the parents at the private schools are doing. You need to get involved in the school; you need to demand your kids pay attention and work hard in the classroom; you need to support us monetarily; you need to support us when we have to discipline your child, not sue us; you need to volunteer at athletic events; you need to find ways to get your kids to and from summer conditioning sessions and encourage him to attend; you need to pressure us for change when the coaches we've hired aren't getting it done; ect. And if you don't do those things, you will be the reason your children do not succeed; not the private schools and I'll be danged if I'm going to participate in any effort to punish the privates when they are the ones doing things right and we're not. That's called lowering the bar folks and I'm not for it."

So when folks talk, that it is of the districts own choice, this is how they operate and where we differ and it will not be changed. It bothers me when people say you (publics) need to change what you are doing, that it is your own choice to do that. Financially it is impossible to do that with the number of publics out there. We want to split, why does that bother you so much?

When you say "We", please don't paint all publics with that wide brush. Not all publics want to split.

First you don't need any financial aid if there is the reciprocal aggremet if out of district.

 

Privates only offer finacial aid because, they choose to and financially can. However, a private school can make the CHOICE not to offer aid if they want. Financially it is not the best idea for a public school to offer aid to OOD students, but there's nothing agianst the KHSAA rules to stop you. Let's say a hypothetical Open enrollment district had the extra funds to be able to give financial aid. Would it be irresponsible for the school to do that? Yes, but you can't tell me there aren't people who individually are fiscally irresponsible, and spend well outside thier means. They made a choice.

 

You ask why I don't want a split. Well the proposed split into only public and private is what you want. You have said the systems are too different and the way we operate is not the same, that the advantages for Privates make it unfair. Enough of us know that if a split happend like this, those advantages are still going to be in place in schools that are not Private. Talk to LBBC about what he thinks. I don't want what he proposes, but I don't have a problem with it, because I think it's fair. I think if we split stricly on Public-Private, especially in football, the smaller Private schools will be in a situation that is so much more unfair than any situation you can show me that is in place now.

I agree this will be very difficult. Look at LCA in just a few short years they are in the state. I don't see why they can not play with the larger ones in just a few more years. Split and let the privates recruit not only students but athletes. But what is happening now is tilted way to much.

As long as any school is a member of the KHSAA athletic recruiting is aginast the rules, split or not.

You want a split and nothing will stop you from wanting it. Thats fine. What I want you to understand is that some of the things that I can pick up that you belive about Private schools admissions are just not true. If you acknowledge and understand what is true, but still want a split, then that is just fine.
