You take kids form many counties. I mentioned this earlier....Our roster will be the same as last year minus 6 seniors and new freshman...Lex Cath lost 33 seniors, but how many will be on there that didn't come from their middle school. I saw in an earlier post that they don't have a middle school football program? How is this possible?

I would not hesitate to say that the majority of Catholic elementary schools in Ky are K-8 . They are associated with one particular parish and usually that parish has it's own sports program . There are probably only a handfull of Catholic middle schools 6-8 ,and the only one that I am familiar with is in Northern Campbell County where the Diocese of Covington consoldated the parish schools and in some cases the Parishes of St Bernard, (Dayton ), Old Sacred Heart and St Anthony (Bellevue ) , St Stephan , St Francis, Corpus Christi and St Vincent in (Newport ) into one elementary school and one middle school , Holy Trinity . This was done because of declining enrollment in the various parish schools . The cities that they are located in are stacked one atop the other and all these former parishes are probably within 3-4 miles of each other so that the logistic in doing this was fairly simple . If as you say that Lex Catholic draws from multiple counties then their feeder parishes are farther apart and independently operate K-8 elementary schools . That is probably why Lex Cath doesn't have a middle school football program .

In reading through the posts it still apprears that the Public school fans see it one way and the private see it another. I guess if you are a private school and obtaining a state championship every year is fairly good why would you want to change and if you are a public school who gets beat down year afgter year by a private school why would you not want change.

 

I think what I would like to know is? What is the percentage of kids that go to Private school and are on financial support of some sort play sports and recieve the financial support because they are expected to play sports. I know that finding out who is on finacial support is kept a secrete at many schools at least the one that I support it's kept confidential. If that percentage is high than I think the private schools are doing something inappropriate. If the percent is low then I think what they are doing is good. They are helping all kids out and are not doing it to gain an unfair advantage. I just have a feeling that that percent may be higher than we would expect.

I have no idea how many are athletes, how many are displaced tuba players, how many are on the French Scrabble team, or how many are on the Echo staff...

Just for giggles, I did a VERY hypothetical exercise:

 

Taking the minimum, 40% of the estimated 1400 students at Trinity is 560 students.

 

IF the $900,000 were evenly divide among the 560 students, the amount per student would be $1,607.14. However, some families have more than one student attending, so this is a VERY hypothetical breakdown.

 

Now, for the 2007-08 school year, the tuition @ Trinity depends upon how you choose your payment options.

 

At the minimum, with the theoretical aid award as figured above, a family would still pay $7168...and that's if they paid the whole year's tuition by early August.

 

If they chose a 12 month payment plan, the amount they'd pay after the theoretical aid award would be $7758, divide by 12 months would be $646.50 a month.

 

Again, all the above "cipherin" is based on REALLY hypothetical assumptions..

Exactly my point. I would doubt if many on here would know where the money goes. If they did know they probable cannot or will not open up that box. If I were a gambling man I would say that it goes to athletes and not displaced tuba players. I was not aware that Trinity had a French Scrabble team. We need to start one at Holy Family. I don't think it will be tuition free although.

You are doing what so many do. You are making an assumption based upon little or no knowledge.

Just for "fun" and for the sake of argument, I caluclated what it would be for a student who received financial aid in the amount of half the tuition. (For the record, I have never personally met anyone who received a full half of their tuition paid). Taking the maximum amount, with the reasonable hypothesis that if someone qualifies for the maximum allowable aid benefit, they would most likely be choosing the 12-month payment plan, the O-O-P expense to the family would be $4682.50, or $390.21 per month.

I'm not going to get to excited about it. We have had public schools and private schools for a long time. 25 years from now we will all be talking about the same old stuff. Personally I could care less if a kid had all of his tuition paid and he player QB, as long as that individual comes out with a good education and it sounds like that is whats going on at Trinity. Very smart kids. I really have no dog in this fight. My Russell Red Devils do just fine. I do not like playing two schools at the same time although. Mercer/Harrodsburg. I thought that stunk.

Ok, lets try this again. Starting at the end and going backwards.

 

LC DOES have an MS football program. The program accomodates schools throughout the Bluegrass region. Kids who play on it come from Fayette County Catholic MS but also from Catholic MSs in Frankfort, Paris, Richmond, Jessamine County, Woodford County. BTW, Henry Clay actually does NOT have a middle school program yet they are considered the best football team in Fayette County. So I am not sure the point.

 

On to the numbers that did not come through the MS program. I will use the current sophomore numbers for an example as I have the data for that. There are 30 sophomores listed in this years roster in the program. Of those at least 22 or at least 73% were also rostered on the 8th grade MS team from 2 years ago. Given any annual turnover rate of 10% (not unusual at all in an urban setting) I would expect 6-9 or so players to come in from out of area or leave the region. So for 30 rostered players having 73% continuity over a 3 year period is outstanding.

 

In short, the facts bear out that the overwhelming majority of LC players have come up through the MS program. They are not recuited or stolen from other schools in the region. Yes, they come from a broader region that just Fayette County because of the make up of the Bluegrass region but they also come from the same region in MS and most end going to LC and there is not an unusual number of kids that did not play MS playing in the HS program.

 

Bell, you wont like this picture in 2 year. This years sophomores will likely be a much better team that this years championship team since they will also have around 30 seniors and they were the first class to run the 3-4 defense in MS and will have run it 5 years. The next class behind them will have run it for 6 years since it used in the MS program at the 7th and 8th grade level. Couple that with a 3 year starting QB and 3 year starting offensive tackle and 2009 will be interesting.

 

Also, if your MS program wants to play against LC send me a message. Next years schedules and games are being worked on and we have to go outside Fayette County for games.

The 27% is for 3 years so around 9% turnover a year. This would be expected in an urban setting. In the final 2 years I expect the number will be simple attrition as it is rare to have new players come in at the junior or senior level. I think we are back to issues that are more urban vs. rural than public vs. private. LBBC has pointed this out numerous times.

I'm curious, are there middle school or youth football league programs in Frankfort, Paris, Richmond, Jessamine County and Woodford County open to kids in those communities attending Catholic elementary and middle schools? If not, why not? I can tell you this: if the Ft. Thomas Jr Football League was ran by the Ft. Thomas Independent School District (Highlands) and was not open to kids attending St. Thomas, St. Catherine, St. Therese and kids living in the county, and they were thus "forced" to play in a separate league ran by say NewCath, I'd bet a dollar to a donut that even more Catholic kids in Ft. Thomas would end up at NewCath instead of coming to Highlands. If there are not "open" leagues ran in those communities first listed above, that is a big reason those communities are losing some athletes to LC every year. Which once again may support my oft repeated premise that its the failures by some public schools that acts as a funnel of athletes to other schools more so than any thing the other schools are doing wrong. Except for the strong religious types that will always insist that their kids go to a private school for religion purposes, most parents will not choose the option of driving long distances back and forth and going through the emotional trauma of having their kids leave their friends to go to a new school, when there is a school with strong academic and athletic programs (and free public transportation too) right down the street.

What I know of 'middle school' football is that its rules, makeup and approach are different county to county. So I am not sure if the kids that play for the LC middle school team are eligible to play MS at their home counties or in Fayette. I know that to be eligible at LC for the middle school team you have to attend a school that is NOT a feeder to a High School with a football team. This disqualifies most, if not all, the public school attendees in Fayette and the surrounding counties and Frankfort and Richmond. So the LC MS program is NOT an enticement to get kids that are otherwise likely to go public HS hooked on the LC brand.

 

I would guess that in most case the kids from outside Fayette can not play for other teams. As noted, the commitment to driving in 4 days a week (practices usually M-W and games usually on Thursday) is not one taken lightly. But there are always kids from Frankfort, Paris, Richmond, etc. that play and do that drive each day during the week. The 'carbon footprint' of the LC football family members is usually fairly large during football season! Especially since all games are against non-Fayette Co. competition, except for LCA. So our games are in Boyle Co., Berea, Frankfort, Rockcastle County, Whitley County, Paris, etc.
