Benzick played in the last regular season game but missed the playoffs due to an argument with his coach. Benzick quit during the argument, but the next day apologized and asked to be reinstated for playoffs. Higgins would not reinstate him, the parents got the JCPS to reinstate him (the kid was wrong in his actions, but not wrong in the reasons), but then the school suspended him for his actions with the coach, so it became a mute point. Long story, but a good kid. Academic now, and not for this thread anyway. You are right in that it probably did cost him the spot, as I know it did on All-District, etc, as Higgins left him off all the ballots.

The ATH list is unique in that it really is an "iron man" award of sorts. All these young men were two way players who excelled in more than one area of the game. From the announcement...

 

All-BluegrassPreps.com team also recognizes 12 players whose versatility and all-around contributions on offense, defense and special teams embody the spirit of high school football, a feature that makes it unique among other honors.

The Athletes idea is great as it recognizes a lot of kids who play both ways and have success on both sides of the ball. These are the positions that are measureable such as yards gained, interceptions, touchdowns, etc. Like I said earlier, this was a banner year for Ky HS football and it would be tough to get all the deserving kids even on 3 teams. Again, great job.

Think back Westsider. Trinity was not the BGP pre-season favorite either of the last two years. Male and X were. They may not be next season. I really don't care if they are or not. Like I have said in my posts many times. It's not were you start, but where you finish that really counts.

I think the BGP team is the most valid of them all. Thanks to all who had a hand in compiling it. The selections are admittedly highly subjective (as is the case with all "all-star" teams) but I feel confident that no favoritism or provincialism entered into the choices. Congratulations to those who made the team and also to those who selected it.

My main thought is with six classes and as big as HS football in KY has become there should be at least a 1st and 2nd team, plus athletes.

 

The suggestion that russelldad made was most excellent --- separate teams for large and small schools.

 

Don't like the athlete designation, however; it sounds like a stand-in for either honorable mention or "we think this guy got robbed but he's not as good as the other guy" and too often it comes off as either a copout or face-saving. That's why there are such concepts as "second team" and "honorable mention."

Not so, Shamrock69, I think if you go back and read the 2007 BGP 6A Preseason Review, you will see that Trinity was predicted as #1.

Congratulations to all of the 36 players selected for the BGP team. What a tremendous group of football talent, who provided us as spectators with many great 2007 moments. :thumb:
