Walton Girls BBall: What's the problem?

Featured Replies

Life is too short to worry about things we can't control. This appears to be a "Cold Case" which may never be solved. I'm sure that after a few mores years of coaching experience, the current coach will turn the program around and everyone will be excited again about WV basketballl.

Every new coach needs time for the team to adjust to the style of coaching. Sometimes it just takes a bit longer depending on the situation.

Hopefully you are right, because if things keep going the way they are, I would imagine many of the talented younger girls will go elsewhere.

I think I sense sarcasm in your voice Madman.

Saw this team play the other night.

I was impressed with #40s inside game. What is her name?

also impressed with #20. What is her name?

I believe #40 is Kelli Dixon and #20 is Janell Sargent.

Hopefully, in a few years the program will turn around, but I feel bad for the seniors who are currently playing. They have a great deal of talent and are just not performing. Not all of this lies with the coaching; however, until the change they were winning and playing extremely well.

Well said. If you trace this specific group of players performance back they were very successful at the varsity level up until the change. Whatever happened, it was not good for this groups winning and losing.

I don't claim to have any real knowledge of the situation, but surely you all aren't suggesting that the administration WANTED the program to begin to lose? There must have been a reason to go with a different coach.
I would have a hard time believing that the school administration would want to have a losing team. That really doesn't make any sense and it's ridiculious to even imply thats what they wanted. I'm sure there were several reasons that the previous coach was let go. What's that old saying....always treat people as you would want to be treated.

I think the purpose of this thread is to discuss the direction in which the program is going. The school stated they wanted to go in a different direction and they definitely have. The question is why are they underachieving so badly and what, if anything, is going to be done about it.

Don't you think when there is any change, that it is always harder on the Seniors & Juniors who were doing well under the old coach? A new coach comes in and has to earn the respect of these upper classmen and the players need to earn the coaches respect as well. Don't you think that everyone has to pull together for this to be a success? Now most coaches would finally come to the conclusion that if these players cannot find it in themselves to play the game this coach wants, then he/she will go to the ones who are wanting to play under the new program. This is ashame for this group of talented young ladies. If you love the game then play the game and be the leader you need to be, make a difference!

I don't think that is always the case. I think many times that new coach provides the catalyst that the team needs to take things to the next level. I have seen new coaches come in and have an impact right away,. Look at Ryle this year for example. They are playing their best ball in years, maybe in school history.

What do you think the difference is?? Are you saying that the players do not respect the coach? That the coach does not respect the players?? If so, why?? The are obvioulsy one of the most talented teams in the 8th region.

You guys are blowing this thing way out of proportion. I have seen this team play and while I agree there are some problems from an execution standpoint they are not heavily talented. They have a couple of nice players but no superstars by any means. They are middle of the pack at best in any region in the state unless a region is very weak. Coaching may improve them some but I can't see them challenging for a region title anywhere in the state. I'm not cutting them down. I'm just trying to send a reality check to some of the posters on this thread.

I think that challenging for an All "A" Regional Title is within their grasp, talent wise, if they can pull things together by then. Their Christmas Tournament will be a big test for them.

I think that every year Walton is going to be competitive in the all A tournament. However I think that their may have been too high of expectations on the current girls. In the same respect I think some of the other small schools are underrated.

Walton has a good group coming up but a lot of this is due to having the opportunity to play year round while in MS. When other small schools let their MS girls start practicing with the HS they start to catch -up I do not know how involved their new coach is a the MS level but it really makes a difference in how they develop and play for the HS Coach.

They are a nice group of players and seem to listen and follow their Coach. Hopefully, things will work out for the best!

No one is saying that the Walton girls were going to win a regional title, all A maybe. Also no one is saying that the school WANTED this. But up until recently, this same group was winning, 18-9 two years ago. Currently, they are playing the same schools and not winning and not playing well. I believe that there are a few good players who could play at the next level. As stated earlier, not all the blame lies with coaching. However, they seem to have no direction, no game plan at all. Even when they start a game and what they are doing isn't working there is simply no adjustments. They have had winning seasons up until now. With respect to the younger girls...they are also very talented but there are many similarities to what you hear about them and what was said at that age about the current seniors. I would just hate to see this continue.
