Walton Girls BBall: What's the problem?

Featured Replies

This has been an intersting post to read. I was not aware of how the coaching change came about two years ago and I do find it surprising to remove a winning coach though. I am not real familiar with the players on the team and have watched them a few times.

One thing that I want to throw out is that success two years ago does not necessarily mean success today. I believe people expect the success to be there but are not aware that other programs may just be catching up to them. Every year you age in high school, it gets tougher to continue to improve your skills. Other programs who have younger players will see the most improvement- they will catch up so to speak. Upper classman can have a tendacy to think that they "have arrived" and have earned their spot and don't have to work as hard. If there is no one(other players) to push them, most don't have the self-motivation to push themselves to get better. There are alot of distractions as well- boyfriends, driving, work, etc. that take away from the time required to improve your skills. It takes more than practice during the season to add to your game- it takes a big time committment in the off-season.

I do believe that the coach has to find a way to "raise the bar" and challenge the players to do better. That can be an extremely difficult task. It is easy to always blame the coach and they do bear the responsiblity of finding a way to do that. The players also have to share in that as well because it is "their" season too. It is what they make of it and they will look back one day and wonder what could have happened if I did this or that. Ultimately, the players need to get better too!

One other point to consider is that when you have success at a young age then other teams also learn what to do to beat you or how to defend your best players, etc. When another team knows your strenghts, it makes it easier to create a game plan against you so if you have not improved your skills, like I mentioned earlier, they will have the advantage.

I am not familiar with the players- their character, etc so I in no way mean to offend anyone- just giving you some outside perspective.

Nice post..I agree with you,

I officiated games for the previous coach...his team had respect for him and would give great effort on his behalf...on the other hand I have been on the floor for this coach and do not see the same efforts...I know there is much unknown about the decision to replace T.L....but from my advantage point...WV made a terrible mistake..

Anyone know where Lubey landed??

He is still teaching at Walton-Verona, just not coaching there. Spending his coaching time with his daughter's various AAU teams. I also heard he helps out at Williamstown every once in a while with Coach Wilhoit.

I agree and it is nice to have an outside opinion. Sometimes you have just an average team.

He's seems like he is keeping his foot in the door when it comes to coaching. I bet he will return - just do not know when or where!

Good to hear he is still staying active and involved in the game.

I think that challenging for an All "A" Regional Title is within their grasp, talent wise, if they can pull things together by then. Their Christmas Tournament will be a big test for them.

This Christmas Tournament just proves our points more, the girls are just notplaying good. Something needs to be done.

I agree, it's been allowed to go on to long it needs to be taken care of now.

As I stated earlier, many people seem to think it is a coaching problem. That may not be the case.

I would agree it's time to start preparing for next year. But that has nothing to do with players.

Did the previous coach have any success in the post season or the all A? I am unfamiliar with the girls program and don't really know what the expectaions should have been.

Since 1991 they have been to the All A once and that was in 2000. They usually are runner -up in their districts and were last year also. Usually they are out in the 1st round at the regionals..Lost to Carroll Co. last year, lost to them in the all A regional also.

I think with Hargett and Garcia last year the expectations were very high but other teams had some good players that stepped up also. They also had some injuries last year that hurt their team.

it's like anything else it starts at the top! Once you've lost respect of those your leading it's very hard if not impossible to get it back.

They did win their last game of the Christmas Tournament over Pendelton County. Maybe that will be the start of a positive swing. But I say if they do not have some success in the All "A' Regional, some changes need to be made. Either with the players, gearing up for the future, or with the leadership. Too much talent to not have some success.
