Why Jesus would not vote for Barack Obama

Featured Replies

The main reason Jesus wouldn't vote for Barack is he's an Israeli citizen and couldn't register to vote in the United States. Unless he registered Democrat. ;)

nice . . . made me laugh

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.

8These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9Wear sandals but not an extra tunic. 10Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them."

12They went out and preached that people should repent. 13They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

What do you think that means?

As for Jesus telling people to sell everything they had and give the money to the poor, how does that gjve with the teaching in the Bible somewhere where the son that did nothing with what his father gave him was negatively compared with the other son that took what his father gave him and increased it. LBBC help me out on this one.

You might be mixing parables.

There is the parable of the talents, where 3 servants were given talents, which I think was money. One doubled theirs and was greatly rewarded. One gained 1/2 of what he had and was rewarded. One buried his because he was afraid to lose it and the owner ripped on him when he returned.

Then there was the prodigal son story, where the youngest son took his inheritance and wasted it. The oldest son stayed and played the role of dutiful son. When the prodigal son returned, dad welcomed him and threw a party. Older son was not happy with dad partying with youngest son even though it was the older son that had been the good son.

What do you think that means?

Hard for me to say, but it seems that Jesus is saying that there will be times and people that will not listen to you, will not heed what you say as a Christ follower and you are simply to move on.

"Sell everything you have and give it to the government so you give your money to the poor . . ." Not a lot of capitalism in that statement

Where did Jesus put the bolded (that I added)? I like to think that the government shouldn't tell me what to do with my money, I can give to the poor as I wish. I mean, is it really charity if someone else is doing it for you? That's like saying the people Robin Hood stole from were doing their duty as charitable person.

Also, I am against the death penalty (as indicated by multiple posts in different threads) so I am assuming you are just bashing the stereotypical conservative? And if you want to point out these liberal things that Jesus would do, where does removing prayer from schools come into place in Jesus' political philosophy?

Maybe you can find multiple reasons why He wouldn't vote for a conservative, which is what no one in this thread is saying. They are simply saying that He wouldn't vote for someone who supports infanticide, whether that means He is voting conservative or abstaining from voting altogether.

You are assuming that much of the money you give to the government is going to the poor - I would say you need to check your facts.

BTW, I don't believe I mentioned anything about giving your money to the government to give to the poor. What I was pointing is that our capitalist/greed based society (of which I am a FULL participant) is not the society that Jesus would envision.

The only point I mentioned was about health care for those who could not afford it. I said nothing about a government run system.

I said, take care of the alien, visit those in prison, give health care to those who need it, sell your worldly possession and give the money to the poor. Jesus words.

Just for kicks and grins:

I don't agree with death penalty, yet I pay taxes that go to a system that uses it -

I don't believe in the war in Iraq, yet I pay taxes that go to a system that keeps running it -

I don't believe in subsidies to big oil companies - yet I pay taxes to a system that gives it to them - (even though they don't NEED nor deserve them)

Yet you don't want the same system to give money to the poor - doesn't that seem odd.

I think it's the same idea from his comment in Matthew 7:6...

"Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under feet, and turn and tear you in pieces."

Yeah...that and the fact that he does not exist.

I am not saying that a lot of government money goes to the poor, or that the government shouldn't look out for the poor, just that taxes are not a form of charity. Also, there needs to be more than government aid, individual help for the poor is necessary moreso.

OOH, Agreed

Jill Stanek... you have changed my life. I think from now on, anything I write will be on the basis of why Jesus would be opposed to something in order to fit my agenda. I can think of the titles now...

Why Jesus Wouldn't Not Shop at Wal-Mart

Why Jesus Wouldn't Take Tae Kwon Do over Kung Fu

Why Jesus Wouldn't Go to a University of Kentucky Game

Why Jesus Wouldn't Listen to Creed... I mean, seriously, even His dad hates them.

etc.

This thread is funny... and kind of sad in certain ways.

It leads me to consider what would happen if Jesus were actually a member of BGP, and posting thoughts, guidance and teachings right here in the P&R forum. Based on nothing more than His actual words recorded in the New Testament he would be slammed for being too conservative, too fundamental in some "opinions" and too liberal in others. My point is, that Jesus Himself could post His actual words and feelings about any issue, and He would be castigated by all but a relative handful of BGP posters.

This tells me nothing has changed in 2000 years.

Whether anyone can definitively state what Jesus would or would not do in any given circumstance is really secondary to the fact that few of us would of our own volition do things His way.

As one who genuinely believes He exists, and is who He says He is, this is a very serious concern.

:thumb: Well said....

OOOOH excellent - can I add . . .

those who treat immigrants (legal or illegal poorly) - we are admonished to be kind to aliens b/c the hebrews were once strangers in a strange land.

We are admonsished to visit and take care of those in prison - not kill them (as you already point out)

We are admonished to love our enemies and bless those who persecute us

Would Jesus vote for someone who wants to deny access to healthcare/insurance because they can't afford it.

Remove the religion portion of Karl Marx's work and Jesus is striding pretty far to left . . .

"Sell everything you have and give your money to the poor . . ." Not a lot of capitalism in that statement

I guess Jesus would vote for Kucinich then;)

I think that Jesus would like to see the churches and believers give all they can to the poor. I just don't think he would like for the government to handle this by taxing and redistributing wealth. There is a huge difference between giving and being taxed.

JMO.

So you want a government that takes money from the rich and gives to the poor?
