Freshman NKY

Featured Replies

I am sure they can play at any upper level. I have seen plenty of 6th, 7th and 8th grade players playing freshman, JV and Varsity.

What is the rule for playing up as a 7th or 8th grader? From what I understand they would have to move right to varsity and could not play frosh or J.V. Does anyone know how this would work?

The way i understand it: Your 4 years of High School eligibility begins when you are a Freshman. If your a 6th grader playing Varsity (it happens), it doesn't count towards your eligibility years.

I am guessing you are referring to the new self imposed rule that Boone County Schools placed on themselves. The rule is that if a girl moves up from middle school to high school she is to be varsity only.

This rule is crazy! IMO!! And is only designed to feed the egos of the middle schools to try and win championships.

The ironic thing is that after they began this rule Boone County Schools stopped playing in the NKAC. They now only play in county schools plus Grant County and Tichenor. To play other schools their coach has to enter them into tournaments.

Not for sure where I had heard this, but i was thinking the same as MC and OC. With the depth that the Boone County Schools have they shouldn't have to reach down that far for players unless thier getting greedy. Maturity plays a major role at the varsity level.

Simon Kenton beat Highlands 41-37. It was a good game SK came out and dominated the first half and was leading by 15 at half. The pioneers started to play sloppy in the second half and let them back in it but started to get back together in the end. It was a very good game.

One girl that played in the eight grade tore her ACL, some of them went to Brossart, and several that have some talent, have quit playing.

I think one of their best players (that would have been) moved to Beechwood because her mom works at the high school. They also have a freshman playing JV/Varsity. She played freshman last year.

To be honest I do not think they were getting the coaching that they needed at the middle school level. It is also hard to only have one coach for 10 - 12 girls (this at any level - MS or freshman).

Nice game by the Pioneers. To hang 30 on the LadyBirds in the 1st half is quite an achievement. 55 is a really nice post player and 30 a good shooter. Good luck with your season.

Williamstown has Chelsea West and Tori Wilhoit. Both are 3 year varsity starters for the team and both played significant minutes during their 6th grade year.

Wilhoit is 4 rebounds short of 500 and should get that her next game. She tied the school record with 16 earlier this year. Not bad for a 5'6" player.

Two excellent choices. Too bad Williamstown just don't have anyone to support them. Do you think someone in the Band might be available?:fire:

You'd still think that with 20 girls playing in 8th, the frosh would be a little stronger. Why not play girls up. There is a girl on 7th purple that is good enough to play frosh. What good does it do her dominating kids at the 7th grade level?

Maybe none.

But maybe Boone Co schools believe that High school teams should be for their High school students?

Personally I don't think the most popular, beautiful, smart, friendly, world-peace loving 7th grader should be the high school Prom queen so why should she be the starting point guard?

Ryle handles Highlands in the 1st game of the Scott Holiday tournament.

Any word on other games? I heard Ryle beat Conner in their second game. Ludlow and Holmes were playing next.

Maybe none.

That's comparing apples to oranges. To play up in basketball the athlete needs have better and stronger skills than those ahead of her. So, if she is good enough then play her! What is wrong with putting your best 5 out on the floor? This should not come down to what grade she is in, if that were the case then only seniors should start!

Campbell County. And I don't know what their policy is. What does prom queen have to do with athletics. And I beleved I mentioned a move to the frosh team. Plus with all of the girls in CC's middle shool program such a move gives more playing time to a couple that would benefit from it. I for one believe an athlete that is physically capable should be playing at their talent level, not their age level. JMO

I saw St. Henry's freshman play Ludlow and was really impressed with their team.

I saw them play too and they are impressive.

Boone co has a policy that players can't be moved up unless they are placed on varsity.

I would take that further and not let any players move up. IMO opinion high school sports should be for high school students. I would consider allowing middle school or grade school kids to play on Frosh teams if otherwise there would not be enough to form a team. That is what the prom queen has to do with athletics. The prom queen, the editor of the paper, the lead in the play, and the center on the team should be high school students who attend that high school.
