Highlands was a big enough school, but a young Jaime Walz was a big enough talent to earn the spot. In my opinion the best players should play at the highest level. Makes it simple.

I agree.

Because principals of the Boone middle schools wanted to keep the players on their respective middle school teams to increase their chances of winning the NKAC championship.

Who is in the NKAC? I wasn't aware of that in Middle School. Highlands plays in the NKYMSBL.

It is not really the NKAC, but they used to have a Boone/Kenton Atheltic League for Middle School, but infighting broke it apart and now there is a Boone County Athletic League that includes the Boone County Middle Schools and Grant County Middle School. So those principals are holding kids back so they can win a league that consists of their school district plus one additional school. It is almost like intramurals.

^ You are correct it was the Boone/Kenton Athletic League. As I said in earlier post, the ironic thing about the middle school rule is that the following year they change to the new league.

As strange as the rule is, the reasoning behind it is even stranger.

I would like to clear some misconceptions up. First, the Boone County Middle School league is nothing like intramurals. In intramurals, students play within their own school. The Boone Middle Schools play interscholastic basketball, which IMO is a very tough league to play in. My school has played a few of the other schools outside of the conference and defeated them, i.e. Campbell County, who is supposed to be very tough in their respective league, yet we are at the bottom of the standings in the Boone league. So, from what I have seen, the level of talent and play in Boone County Middle Schools is very high compared to some other leagues around here.

Second, there is no rule that states that middle school players in Boone County can't play high school. The actual rule is that if a player chooses to play high school basketball, they are not eligible for the middle school conference games or tournament. The reason for this rule is probably so that girls who move up to play high school don't come back to the middle school to play in the tournament. However, the choice is left up to the high school coach, parents, and the player.

I have known two girls to be asked by a high school coach to play up, and neither chose to do it because they would get more playing time at the middle school level and they wanted to play with their friends. One is still playing in high school and having a great career and the other is on full basketball scholarship and starting as a freshman on their college team. Please keep in mind that these decisions are not made lightly and are made in the best interest of the player. The decisions are not made so that middle school teams can win a tournament!

Legally, Boone County middle schools have ZERO say in the matter. There is a KRS that protects a players right to tryout on the varsity level. I believe only the Board of Education can make the rule.

The MS passing a rule about it would be like them telling their females, they cannot be in girls' scout on their time outside of the MS.

You are incorrect about there being a rule. The rule is that a middle school player that moves up can only play varsity. The rule was put into place following the 2004 2005 season.

The principals through the site based decision councils in the county set this policy effective for the 2005 2006 academic year. They made the policy because for 2 season prior middle school girls were asked to move up and the ms principal argued strongly against it. The second year a meeting with the county superintendent, high school, and middle school principal involved occurred, to discuss the players and their move up to high school. They were permitted because there was no policy in place at the time to prevent it.

That it is what set in motion the creation of the policy, they had to put it in writing.

Coach4life,

^ Sorry I miss read your post. When I first looked at it I thought you were saying that there was no rule. I now see where you were just clarifying it for everyone. I apologize!

[/Where is this in writing? I just read the Boone County Middle Schools athletic bylaws and it is not in there and it is not in our school SBDM minutes. Was this just one particular school in Boone County?

I don't think anyone is questioning the talent of the Boone teams. How did all of this wind up in the freshman thread??

Definitely not questioning the talent of the middle school program at Boone County. Obviously, based on the results of BCHS alone, they must produce some talented players. Just questioning the decision to hold kids with talent back if THEY want to play up.

Well no one has disputed this reason. So is this correct?

What other reason could they have???
