Freshman NKY

Featured Replies

I am guessing you are referring to the new self imposed rule that Boone County Schools placed on themselves. The rule is that if a girl moves up from middle school to high school she is to be varsity only.

This rule is crazy! IMO!! And is only designed to feed the egos of the middle schools to try and win championships.

The ironic thing is that after they began this rule Boone County Schools stopped playing in the NKAC. They now only play in county schools plus Grant County and Tichenor. To play other schools their coach has to enter them into tournaments.

The Boone County high schools are strong at the high school level and do not need middle school players to fill their rosters. Second, girls can move up if the varsity coach wants them to play up, but at this time most are not needed. A few years ago, an 8th grader was asked to move up to play high school, but it would have only left 7 girls on the 8th grade team. So, the high school coach decided not to move her up because she did not want to hurt the feeder program. This has nothing to do with egos and trying to win games, but rather trying to keep a strong feeder program intact. Most high school coaches in Boone County have a good relationship with their feeder programs.

Also, the middle schools in Boone County do play non-conference games, not just in tournaments. They play other teams, such as Walton-Verona, Highlands, St. Henry, etc.

The Lexington Catholic Lady Knights freshman team is undefeated so far.

Highlands squeaks by Conner 34-31. Move to silver medal round at Scott Tournament.

St. Henry Freshmen lost to St. Patrick last night. I believe St. Henry was undefeated going into that one.

Highlands beats NDA and Dixie today to capture Silver Medal trophy. Ashley Hempfling and Kelsey Dunn named to all tournament team. Conner take the bronze. Ryle and Scott competing for the gold.

Any word on that gold medal game?

St. Henry has moved up their two best freshman (Abby Janszen & Taylor Gamm) to JV and Varsity. From what I hear, there is still a fair amount of talent on the freshman team, but it will take time for them to step into their new roles.

Thank you. Second year in a row all 3 winners come from the same pool.

Last year: Gold HHS, Silver NDA, Bronze Boone. I love the tourney, I do think the brackets could be broken out a little more evenly.

Boone co has a policy that players can't be moved up unless they are placed on varsity.

I would take that further and not let any players move up. IMO opinion high school sports should be for high school students. I would consider allowing middle school or grade school kids to play on Frosh teams if otherwise there would not be enough to form a team. That is what the prom queen has to do with athletics. The prom queen, the editor of the paper, the lead in the play, and the center on the team should be high school students who attend that high school.

Jaime Walz had already scored her 1000th point at the varsity level before she left middle school. Are you saying that that kind of talent should not be allowed to play at the varsity level just because of her age??

Would you apply the same rule to academics?? No 8th graders should be allowed to take Algebra I because it is a freshmen course? What about Covington Latin? Make all of the students there go back to middle school??

Boone comes back from 12 down at half, to beat the LadyBirds by 11.

Who does Boone have playing on their team? Heard their coach was "T'd" up at the Scott tourney.

Middle schools teach Algebra I as early as 7th grade.

But to better answer your question, academic classes are not competitions, so I think that they are two separate issues.

Ohio does not permit middle school kids to play high school athletics period, no matter how talented the player.

Maybe KY needs to address that issue as well.
