Most spread out over the bench over a few seasons, not all on the same bench AT ONCE!

Never tried to make entire starting lineups out of all of them.

A lot of these guys are better than the ones we have now.

I guess you are dismissing the class of Dan Issel, Mike Pratt, amd Mike Casey. Still the most talented UK class ever. Probably would have won a national title in 1970 if not for Casey's broken ankle.

And the class of Jack Givens, James Lee, Mike Phillips, and Rick Robey won a national title, an NIT when it still meant something, advanced to a national title game, and lost a regional final to Nothe Carolina.

Does not sound like an aberration to me.

 

3 of the 7 titles came in the late 40's in a 4 year run.

2 of the 7 titles came in the 90's in a 3 year run.

 

5 of the 7 titles came in 7 years.

2 of the 7 titles came in the other 60some years.

Also, I did a longer post on it but take UCLA out of the picture and it comes into even more of an aberration looking at all of the years of NCAA basketball.

 

If I recall correctly ONLY 3 other teams BESIDES UCLA have had a run like UK in the late 40's (and 50-51) and mid 90's.

 

San Fran win they won it back-to-back with Bill Russell sometime in the 50's.

Cincy in the early 60's win they went to 3 title games.

Duke in the late 80's win they went to 3 title games winning two.

 

Besides UCLA, only 3 other programs IN ALL OF THE NCAA HISTORY have had runs like the two UK runs.

And again, put the players on the floor who were supposed to be the UK stars to mix with the role players and you have a team that is similar to the early 80's. Good team, not going to win the NCAA title. EXACTLY LIKE the early 80's.

 

BUT HERE IS THE DIFFERENCE. Star players did not leave college after their freshmen or sophomore years in the 80's.

 

Today, do you really think that Sky Walker plays 4 years at UK? No way. He is gone after sophomore or junior year.

 

Bowie probably doesn't spend a year at UK and goes right out of HS and is not the answer to the greatest sports trivia question of all time. (who did Portland draft instead of Michael Jordan?)

 

Turpin probably turns pro too.

Talent does not alone win titles. Everyone needs to quit harkening back to the mid-90's as it is normal UK years. It is not.

 

ONLY ONCE did UK have talent like they did in the mid-90's that PRODUCED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To me, that mid-90's team that won the first title, is the greatest UK TEAM OF ALL TIME. NOT a normal UK team.

 

TO ME, it is one of the 5 greatest teams of all time at any school. NOT A NORMAL UK TEAM.

Those are unreal runs, but you don't get the wins programs like UNC and UK have by 2 or 3 year runs here and there. It's talent over the years, and the last few years have hurt us.

It's not an abberation to have talented team after talented team. The '96 team is unique, but teams like the '78 and '97 teams should be the norm. Talent enough to win it with skill and a break or two on any given year.

If you've followed UK any ammount of time, you know the expectations.

It's crazy to expect to WIN it every year, but it's not crazy to expect to be in the thick of it, which we are not. We're not even considered a real threat anymore. THAT is not BCG's fault.

I don't think Billy G. is the right guy for this job. I know it sounds like bashing, but really. He has already made 3 players mad this year, one deciding whether or not to transfer. I've also heard a lot about his late night drinking escapades. We'll see how much everyone misses Tubby as this season gets rolling.

The same talent you mentioned could make the NBA easier now than then based on a lot more teams. Guys that did not make the cut then could make it. possibly, now.

We have to deal with the here and now, and it's a part of the NCAA game now (early departures) and has been for some time. Definitely since Tubby has been a head coach. All the big time programs lose players every year, but still manage to put a quality and talented team on the floor. Why couldn't we? Look at the programs that lost players early the last few years and were right back the next year. It's recruiting to the present. It's how you have to play the game now. It may not be right, but it's how you succeed.

Tubby just did not do it or chose not to.
