January 3, 200818 yr Author Two movies on showing conditions of slave ships. How accurate is Amistad in it's role of bringing about the Civil War? I know I have to fast forward the naked slaves part on the ship but the rest seemed good. I haven't seen Amazing Grace yet but heard it was good for showing conditions on a slave ship. Anyone?

January 3, 200818 yr Author Is there a movie/documentary out there that does a good job of showing the global warming debate without the lies from either side or the obvious political leanings of either side? Especially since it is not proven on either side.
January 3, 200818 yr Has anyone seen the movie on Nixon? What about Watergate movies? Any other WWI movies besides Sergeant York? Any movies on the wars between Civil War and WWII? Any depression era movies? Watergate: All the President's Men WW I: Stille Nacht. It's a foreign film about the first Xmas in the trenches near Ypres I believe. The event of Christmas led the German, French and British to meet in the No Man's Land. It also covers the problems each had with getting the men to fight again after the event. They had to remove many of the leadership and breakup the companies. Indian Wars: Son of the Morning Star. It's about Custer and Crazy Horse and presents both sides on their journey's to the Little Big Horn. Depression: Grapes of Wrath. None better to describe the Dust Bowl, the Okie Migration, labor and the poverty. If you want one on the labor movement in the Coal Fields you must see Matewan by Sayles. It's an historical drama with some fiction added to bring the story of the labor struggle in the coal fields to life. It's set in early 20's during the Coal strikes of those years. Based on the true events in Matewan, WV. Find a book called History According to the Movies. Great read and a lot of essays from historians that show where the movies got it right and where they got it wrong.

January 4, 200818 yr "Gideon's Trumpet" (1980), with Henry Fonda, is a good movie about the Supreme Court ruling in the 1960s that led to court appointed attorneys for defendents who can't afford to hire their own.
January 7, 200818 yr I have not read through the thread, but if you are looking for something related to Watergate, All the President's Men is a great flick. We watched it in my The Press and Politics class.
January 7, 200818 yr Patriot I know is American Revolution but is it purely fictional or has some historical basis behind it. Last of the Mohicans what would be the subject area? Patriot I would only use for battle sequences if that. No historical basis that am aware of. I know that Colonel Tarleton did have a reputation for being ruthless but they way overplayed it in the film. Last of the Mohicans you could use for Social Studies as well. I think that Good Night and Good Luck is great along with the original Manchurian Candidate. Good Morning Vietnam, Gladiator has its moments which are useful, parts of 300(despite the over the top nature of it) could be useful, select scenes from U-571(Das Boot would probably be better though), 1776, Michael Collins, Braveheart, Gettysburg, All Quiet on the Western Front(even though it is depressing)...There are a number of more that I can't think of off the top of my head right now but if you put your mind to it you can really find all sorts of educational examples and uses for any number of films.
January 7, 200818 yr The Patriot is highly fictionalized and features made up characters. Mel Gibson's character is loosely based on Francis Marion and Col. Tavington is loosely based on Col. Banastre Tarleton. The climactic battle is similar to the Battle of Cowpens but is also greatly changed. I would not reccomend The Patriot from a historically accurate viewpoint. Didn't see this. January 7, 200818 yr I like the movie but I don't think it would be good for school. Kind of like 300, great movie but not if you're trying to show what really happened. Only part of 300 I would use would be the very beginning of the battle when the Spartans are still in Phalanx. That would give the students an idea of the regimented fighting style the Greeks excelled in. After they break phalanx in the film though it would be worthless educationally.
