I've always called them "gut sprints" or "suicides".

We call them Raider sprints.

I don't call them "suicides" just for the reason LBBC mentions. I tell the players "4 lines." While some may call it "PC" I prefer to look at it as being sensitive to another human being. I don't know the complete family history of every player. Yelling "suicides" probably has no negative effect on 99.99% of the players but its the .01% that I'm worried about. If that .01% has suffered the tragedy of suicide in their family or with a friend, they don't need to be reminded of it every day in basketball practice.

 

Call me PC. Call me sensitive. Call me anything that you think is offensive. I'll take it. I just won't ever call out "suicide" to a bunch of kids.

I think they called them "Kill Drills" in my day, maybe not much better. But I do know at my some schools they won't call them "suicides" or "kill drills".

The head coach at one of the schools I root for gives a positive spin to the sprinting drill and refers to them as "Champions".

The Trimble County girls team calls them Victory Sprints.. not sure on that one. They start them sitting down on the ground backwards, or laying down to work on getting up quick

I usually called them by a far worse name when we had to run them, or maybe I was talking about my coach..

I called them suicides and always will. I think were getting to P.C.

 

What if a coach says were getting killed on the boards and they have a player who has somebody that has been killed in their family? Is that insensitive to them? Where do you draw the line?

I have called them suicides but mostly have called them and heard them called "puker's". Mostly bc the trash barrels at the end of the floor / field were not there for looks :sssh:, they had a purpose..

Our coach called them Ching Chang Chongs. We didn't have any Asians on the team so I don't know if it was offensive to them or not. Not really sure why they were called that. They looked more like Loafs and Mopes.

It is difficult to say no to changing the name without sounding insensitive.

 

I have heard it called Kamikaze's and Lakers. Not sure where Lakers comes from.

 

Oddly enough when I was younger, I had a race team called "Kamikaze Racing", meant to imply I would do anything on a track, including hit you to win.

 

Then I met a WWII vet who watched me race and he showed me the error of my ways. Had my dad been alive, he would have felt the same as he was stationed in the Pacific as well.

 

Sometimes we don't realize we are being insensitive.

Always heard if someone collapsed and died during one, a lawyer would have a field day in court when he asks the coach what the players were doing. "Running SUICIDES"????
