There's no doubt in my mind, "The Cannon" plays a big part in Highlands football. I have been around for along time and I have seen alot of high school football games throughout the state. Everyone knows about the cannon. I have experienced people talking about the football team or the game and the next thing you would here is," what about that Cannon"!!! The Bluebird nation if its past or present players, parents or fans love it and they want to hear it. And the opposing team players and fans don't like it, and are intimitated by it. Most definetly the "12th man". Fear it but respect it!!!

Unless you use it shoot out an extra defender for penetration on Goal line sets I doubt it has ever won a game. Adds to the atmosphere for sure but I doubt the opposing players could care less. I know I did not after I realized what it was.

Shoot out an extra defender? :creepy: When you call your fans the 12th man, they don't actually win the game either. The 12th man is just that, It's atmosphere.

The cannon has been a part of Highland's tradition (and folklore) for many, many years. It's just woven into the fabric of Bluebird football.

 

It helps define who they are. However, it's not the 12th man!

 

Stop their offense (if that's possible) and the cannon is silent......:sleep:

Hopefully people didn't take my earlier post the wrong way. I am one of the biggest supoorters of the Cannon. It sends chills when it goes off. You have to be a former player to grasp the true feeling. It is a part of HHS football and other teams and fans do hate it. Why would you like it if you are the opposing team. When it goes off, it means welcome to HHS and by the way, "we just scored" on you. But by no means is it the 12th man. Highlands doesn't need a 12th man. That might be arrogant but whatever! Last I looked all those away game wins, no Cannon. We used to take it to State and to a few exception away games but not any more. I for one will forever love the Cannon! Long live the Cannon!!!

I heard from a very reliable source that the Cannon came up in discussion during Pre-planning process for the additional construction phases that will take place over several years. Apparently, their will be serious discussions on designing a terrace of some sort and locating the Cannon in a special area and will be forever placed in high regard. WOW!, that sorta tells one how important that big blue and white cast iron antique means to the people of Ft. Thomas. Long live the Cannon!!!!!

I think, partly because they redesigned that area and took away the stairs. Also, maybe it was a safety issue. It got pretty crazy over there.

 

I can remember seeing the guys jumping up and down through the frosted glass windows of the door, and hearing them getting fired up. Then all of a sudden the door would fly open and they would come pouring out like a freight train! As they flew down the steps and through the gauntlet of fans, the band would play, and the cannon would be fired. It was definitely goosebump time!

 

Did it go out when Coach Duffy implemented the "running around the goalpost" when leaving the locker room? The year prior to the construction (1986 football season), we were running through the "gauntlet".

 

Regardless, I don't think of the cannon of the 12th man. I think the fans place more emphasis on it than the players.

Well then you are definately showing your age over me Papa Bird. There were 5 cannon members the other night that got caught wathcing that Field Goal while Boom laid the death sentence on em.:mad: What? , What you say?
