And to think Mac had a running start in the right direction and the guy the caught him was going in the opposite direction. Fortunately for Highlands, Mitch got his speed from his Momma's side of the family!

I really don't consider the cannon the 12th man, but I do think it really had an effect in one particular game. The early 90's, can't remember the exact year, when we loaded it into a U-Haul and parked it in the back yard of a special friend in Park Hills. I think everyone was shocked to hear it go off and I really believe it gave the team alittle extra mojo that game.

Scoring at away games is anti-climatic without the cannon.

I guess I am with LN on this one. I got jazzed up without the cannon. My entire family was up in the stands and whenever I got on the field, all I heard was a really loud "88" from my brother and a big whistle from Billy. The cannon is cool, and it never gets old to hear the first time it goes off and see the reaction from a visitor who may have not been there before, or heard about it. It takes you by surprise and if you don't pay attention and scare the heck out of you. I love to see that reaction. When I played, the cannon was not the 12th man, the fans were. I just wish our fans would stand up more often when a big play is about to happen. I don't think that the people get emotional enough until its a close game then they pull out all the stops.

 

I also remember the time that the cannon was at Cov Cath, that was awesome. I think it may have something to do with why they built those stands on that side. Don't want all those people getting a free game to watch. I liked to see that in the 90's when all those people would sit in the back yards, grill out, etc. That was really a cool feature of Cov Cath. It's gone for them now. I would say any of them that are Cov Cath fans are probably a little bitter. It's just progress and the extra bleachers were a necessity. Maybe someday HHS will get more, like in phase 47 of our remodeling of the schools.

I feel as if it has won alot of games for the Birds in the past.

 

If HHS opponents also felt this way, I'm sure one of them (toting a little Quikcrete) would have remedied the situation by now.

So you are saying that when you to bust through the doors and run down the steps and run through the gauntlet of people that use to line the field with the cannon going off you didn't get goosebumps.

That's one thing I miss so much about the old days. Seeing the Letcher County people do their thing brought back a lot of memories.

I forgot about that...but then at my age I forget a lot of things. When/why was that stopped? I remember as an elementary student how cool it was to be that close to those gigantic football players.

I think, partly because they redesigned that area and took away the stairs. Also, maybe it was a safety issue. It got pretty crazy over there.

 

I can remember seeing the guys jumping up and down through the frosted glass windows of the door, and hearing them getting fired up. Then all of a sudden the door would fly open and they would come pouring out like a freight train! As they flew down the steps and through the gauntlet of fans, the band would play, and the cannon would be fired. It was definitely goosebump time!

I'm sure they would if they could. The security around the cannon is pretty tight. Very tight. Security cameras, etc. We know our opponents would love to steal or destroy it and have made the necessary precautions.

Sorry Pat, but I don't think its the 12th man either. Frankly, if we fans didn't make so much out of it, I doubt the players would even notice it going off. I didn't when I played. Not one bit. It didn't fire me up, it didn't motivate me to reach down a bit harder, it didn't do anything for me when I played. Heresy to state, I admit, but just telling the truth. Do I like hearing it go off as a fan? You betcha I do. But as for the 12th man, not at all IMHO.

You are not alone...More than a few Ref's have hit the dirt while trailing a Highlands RB into the north endzone.

I gotta go with Boom on this one. Plus I loved the fact the the visitors hated it so much.

Roadrunner, I notice you have "Fear the 'Bird" under your avatar. I have seen some other posters use this phrase as well. I'm just curious where you got this from. Is this something HHS fans have been saying for awhile?
