During Boyle's title run's under Smith, they were 118 - 9,then he went to UK. One group of kids who went through never lost a game, which includes UK's Jacob Tamme.

I don't think he had 4 straight years without a loss, though, did they? If they did, wouldn't they would have broken Trinity's 50 game win streak record?

You are right. Boyle was 15-0 in '99, '00, and '01. they won 2 games in '02 to run the streak to 47 and were upset. That '02 went 13-2 while winning the AAA title. the '03 team went 15-0. So that's a five year record of 73-2.

 

But like you said it didn't come at the beginning like Beatty and Yeagle so Smith would not qualify for this thread. :thumb:

Still, it was an absolutely amazing run and at the time I said that we would never see another run like that in KY again.

 

I think it could happen in a few places with the expansion to 6 classes, though. Not likely, but possible.

Yea Homer Smith from Highlands. someone correct me with the exact numbers, but it is like 96 and 8. he went on to college after that. I overlooked the "active" part.

 

His name was Homer Rice, not Smith. Sorry that I don't have his numbers. Went on to coach the Bengals and served as the AD at Georgia Tech.

In a side note here, the coach at St. X (Ohio) is now 50-3 as the school heads to the D-I state title game this week. Not bad when you consider they play Elder, Moeller, LaSalle, Colerain, et all every year just to get past the regional round.

 

Also played Trinity this year, along with DeMatha (Md.), St. Iggy's ( play them every year), and the list goes on.

 

Given their schedule every year, it's an almost impossible start to a career.

The team that ended the streak was Danville. Their first loss in 4 years was against the little 1A school down the road.

Actually arch rival Danville beat them 20-10. It was 13-10 late when Boyle had to go for it deep in their own end and failed. Danville stuck it in to seal the deal. West Jessamine was two games later.

 

No excuses but that team did not find itself until the last 2 months when Brodie Overstreet was finally healthy and Brandon Smith began to get a better handle on the offense.

Seems like we have several Ky coaches that are also top notch including Beatty, Yeagle, Smith, Rice and Mueller. What hurts Mueller's record a bit, in addition to the 2-13 forfeit season, is the losses to Elder and Colerain, which in some people's opinion, we have no business even scheduling (I'm not one of those folks however).

It's certainly impressive, nearly Faust like in his glory years with Big Moe. This year, they've maintained a top 10 national ranking everywhere while playing without their top rusher the first part of the year, and then losing their starting quarterback late in the regular season. How can you do that?

Specht's start is legendary. Faust didn't have this kind of start and he ended up as the head coach at Notre Dame, nor did, Combs, Grippa, Ramsey, or Mancusco (sp).

 

That said, no slight was intended to Beatty or Mueller. They are two of the best coaches in the midwest and their track record proves it.
