Specht's start is legendary. Faust didn't have this kind of start and he ended up as the head coach at Notre Dame, nor did, Combs, Grippa, Ramsey, or Mancusco (sp).

 

That said, no slight was intended to Beatty or Mueller. They are two of the best coaches in the midwest and their track record proves it.

I don't have Jack Morris stats at Mayfield but in 24 seasons he won 254 games. He has not coached (head coach that is, he helps his son coach to this day) since the mid 90's so some of you on here may not recall Morris.

Help from someone form Ludlow ... how many wins did Randy Reese had there and how many years was he there?

 

Randy Reese was only at Ludlow a couple or 3 years. He won the state in '75 and I believe left after the '76 season.

I recall him well and his Mayfield teams were some of the best AA games ever when they played Corbin in '76 and '77. It says a lot when some of his better teams didn't make it as far ('80 comes to mind) but were still mind blowing in what they did.

 

One might also want to remember (if I'm wrong say so Toothpick) that if not for a Danville blocked EP in OT in '87 the Cardinals would have been the first team to three peat the state title.

I would guess somewhere around 20 wins, or less, during his time at Ludlow. In '75 they lost their 1st game of the season to Lloyd then went on to win out and in '76 I think they went 6-4.

This year, they've maintained a top 10 national ranking everywhere while playing without their top rusher the first part of the year, and then losing their starting quarterback late in the regular season. How can you do that?

So.... if a coach was able to overcome losing his top rusher and losing their starting QB for a time while still keeping a national ranking is a good coach? I think I know one here in Ky that qualifies!!

I still go with Dennis Lampley of Trinity as one of the best coaches I ever saw work the sidelines. He is 138-21 in his tenure at Trinity and quit still a young man to take the AD job. Percentage is 87%, but includes 5 State championships and 3 undefeated seasons in a row.

I will allow that Beatty's playoff record of 30-2 (94%) is way ahead of most everyone on the list. Add in his 3 playoff wins this year and the percentage increases more. Lampley's playoff record was 33-8, still a major success ratio.
