I really like Gillespie. I think he is a great head coach. But if he gets a DUI, I am perfectly okay with UK letting him go. It is not right that he has already had 2. A 3rd one simply means Gillespie has a problem IMO. I hope with all the rumors of the near miss that if this did happen, that Gillespie has finallly learned from his mistakes.

I have heard some rumors involving Gillespie and it's not a good thing. He needs to get his head on straight or he'll be one and done with UK.

I spoke to a friend of mine in the Lexington Area today (older gentleman, long-time UK fan / supporter / booster) and he told me that Gillispie has polarized the hard-core fans in Lexington more in his short tenure than even Tubby did at the lowest points. Given the divide between those pro-Tubby and anti-Tubby, that says a lot.

 

Again, that is only one man's opinion.

Tubby Smith gets hired, automatic label of he's great, super, premier, etc...Billy Gillispie gets hired at UK, the same superlatives get tossed about. He's what 100-58 (.633, 5 years)....very good numbers, but let's be honest, not close to being great.

 

UK fans have unrealistic expectations often, to point of criticizing a coach entirely too much, his philosophy and certainly the players/talent. Coach G, gained national attention with the advancement of Texas A & M.

 

Honestly, most UK fans never heard of him, until the recent run at A & M. If the information is accurate, than you can decide if this is guy you want leading your UK basketball program. If distorted, give him time before he's crowned great, greatest or terrible, worst....

Again, wasn't intending to single you out but I just wanted to respond the perception, that many have of Coaches at UK.

 

We all get to have opinions, which is the great thing and many of us, have read the bios, previous experience of current/former coaches.

 

I hope the contract issues are resolved, for the best interest of UK Athletics.

If UK have any problems now, then they should have checked his "status" before.

 

Any coach that goes to parties, and hangs with 18-23 year old girls needs to be a bench coach not a head coach. UK's problem to sort out.

I think some are being harsh at this stage...call it hypocrisy if you want.

Comparing Gillispie to Huggins is a little off. He is not nearly as accomplished as Huggins. Huggins had a long history of issues prior to his dismissal. Probation under his watch, recruiting suspect individuals that later got into trouble at UC, then a televised DUI. Is BCG heading down that path? Far too early to tell.

I know of one place he hung out at this summer and it is by far an adult crowd, and one other place where there are older adults.

 

He has not gotten a DUI at UK. If he had it would be all over the news. He has not broken any NCAA rules.

So the rumors will persist.

 

As for polarizing some of the folks in Lexington, I think what you are seeing is that he is not nearly as accessible as Tubby was. He is not overly friendly and is not one to look for the media spotlight. He is not real comfortable speaking to large crowds. He has not attended some functions that traditionally were attended by Tubby. He upset some folks at the Lexington Country Club by not showing for a "meet and greet".

 

People are eating this up...great message board fodder.

There are other coaches out there that I could ramble on...it doesn't justify the supposed actions of BCG.

Well mid 40's and being divorced isn't exactly the ideal age to find a new wife and start a family.

So if he is supposed to be partying with young girls, I guess some of those other rumors that were out there when he first got here have been squashed. :laugh:
