Don't think Diahann Carroll (although she if very pretty) and Jimmy Smits is top 50 caliber. I'd be willing to say one of the reason she's on the list is because her show "Julia" was the first time that a black woman was the lead character on t.v. show.

November 15, 200718 yr Because he basically WAS television during his time. Once his tv program went off, nothing was broadcasted afterwards; just white noise. That is until Burt Sugarmans's The Midnight Special came along.:ylsuper: Don't forget Tom Snyder.
November 15, 200718 yr I have to agree that Carson is no. 1; he was on television for 40 years and gave the Seinfields and others THEIR starts. I, however, would have added Rod Serling for his Twilight Zone and Night Gallery bit. I'm sure I stand alone on this but I do it bravely.

However, remember Diahann Carroll's show, Julia, about a single black woman raising her young son? Kind of pioneering stuff back in the day. What about Red Skelton?
