Gonna be in DC for a week, any suggestions?

Featured Replies

Actually, I'm going to be in Beltsville, MD for a week for work, helping out another office, and I see its near DC, which I've never been to either of these places, so it should be interesting. I'll be working like 8-5 so that may limit my tourism but I'd like to know whats interesting out there, stuff to do, casinos? Anyone spent much time out there?

Whos that?

Whos that?

I hope you're kidding.

Go to the Smithsonian (several different buildings). They are all free. My favorites are the Air & Space or American History, but they are all great. 30 min. south is Mount Vernon, but you need a half day for that. (Actually you can spend a day at most of the Smithsonian buildings.) Park on the outskirts and take the train into DC. The Mint is not that great. Arlington National Cemetary is also good. The Haloucaust (sp.?) Museum is really good (and heart wrenching) but you need to get tickets early in the day - or at least you had to 8 years ago. Go to the Lincoln Memorial, the Archives (Big thumbs up), or the Vietnam wall, but don't waste your time trying to get up in the Washington Monument.

If you have never been to DC, then you have to see the Vietnam Memorial. I had seen pictures, but pictures do not do it justice, it is much bigger then any picture you have ever seen of it.

The Smithsonian is a have to if you have time. Air and Space and American History are great ones to visit, you can spend as much time as you want to spend and will not get bored. A great place.

The Capital, but you will have to get passes from a Kentucky Rep and with your time restrictions that may be impossible, but if you stay an extra day, then try to go there. I found it very interesting.

Just a few, but try to see them. The sub-way will take you everywhere, do not try to drive in DC, the sub-way is clean and safe, I was very impressed with the sub-way, not what I expected. There are many places to eat close to the Sub-way stations, the sub-way will take into Pentagon City Mall, if you want to do some shopping, good size mall with plenty of places to eat. You should never have a hard time finding something to do in DC, there is plenty.

:thumb:Good points. I would say for first timers to definitely hit all the big stuff. If the weather is nice do some walking and hit the White House, Capital Hill, Lincoln, Jefferson, WWII, Vietnam, Korean memorials...

If your looking for a night out Georgetown has some nice restaurants and bars...

Yeah, don't get a parking ticket. I was late feeding the meter by about 5 minutes. Ticket was $25. Meters are 25 cents for 15 minutes. I would recommend the subway. D.C is awesome by the way!

If you plan on walking around looking at the sights better have a good pair of walking shoe's. There is just so much to do. If you contact the Travel and vacation bureau in DC they will send you a packet and you can pick out what you want to see. There are several other place's close by in Virginia and Maryland. Have fun and be safe. JD

Air and Space Museum is a must.

National Law Enforcement Memorial

And if you're lucky some religious sect or special interest group will have a gathering/demonstration on the mall. They can be pretty entertaining.:creepy::rolleyes:

You're going to DC and you're looking for casinos?

I would seriously entertain taking the train rather than trying to nagivate through DC in your pimp mobile.

If nothing else, go to the Vietnam Memorial and soak it in.

Suggestion #1. Don't drive in DC. Take the metro.

The subway system is very nice...I road it several times two summers ago.

Definitely go to the Holocaust Museum...a must see.
