Football playoffs: The old system

Featured Replies

So I suppose you would feel that Highlands baseball team devalued the baseball tournament when it made the playoffs a couple of years ago when they were terrible, right? And I'm sure you made a corresponding post in the baseball forum to that effect, right? And I'm sure you're writing the KHSAA to request that they amend the baseball tournament eligibility rules to permit only the top two teams in the district into the tournament, right?

And please don't give me that everybody gets a trophy crap. Nice rhetoric, but totally hollow. They are getting into the playoffs. Big blooming deal. That's no accomplishment; that's no trophy. Its only an opportunity to make an accomplishment. Nothing more; nothing less.

Well done. :thumb:

Money kid. Money!!!!!!!!

You do not know what you are talking about. The KHSAA does not ge the gate for these ealy round games it is split between the 2 schools playing the game. Get over it 4 teams is here to stay.

Leatherneck,

I agree 100% on the 4 playoff qualifiers from each district (heck, I am in the minority that says let everybody in) since more football is a good thing in my book.

However, I really like matching up against a different district in the first round. It is just more compelling to me than a regular season rematch.

I'm with you let everyone in, play a single elimination tournament, it would only add one round per class, we are almost there now.

I understand the fun in seeing/playing other district teams and agree with that.

But it really is a dollars and cents thing for the superintendents. With first round gates of the 1 vs 4 teams having almost always being terrible from my observations over the years of following Highlands, regardless of whether the two teams were from the same district or of different districts, the supers just thought that the travel time and expense should be decreased for the first round.

As for the 2 vs 3 teams in the first round, my guess (and its a guess) is that when that game was between two teams in the district vs teams from two districts, the gates were larger when the 2 teams were from the same district. I am saying that only because I assume that the district rivalry between two teams probably close in caliber brings out a whole lot of fans, some of which might (particularly the 3 seed) not have travelled an hour plus if the other team is in another district. Although that assumption may not be accurate in all circumstances.

In the second round, I have to assume the intra district games will have huge gates and again, my guess, is even larger than if it was inter district competition. Again speaking from my Highlands perspective only, I can't imagine a bigger gate than Highlands vs. CovCath, whether we'd be playing Johnson Central or Lincoln Co. for that matter.

Bottom line is that when the supers proposed the change, given that is what the KHSAA does in I think every other sport, the BOC really couldn't have a compelling reason to tell them no. Now I know the football coaches don't like the current system and it appears a majority of the people on here don't like it, but the question is whether the supers care about those thoughts.

Whatever we do in terms of inter or intra district play, why not look at alternative scheduling in an effort to increase attendance.

We touched on this in another thread, but one idea (in the first round only) would let the 1/4 games be played on Thursday and the 2/3 games on Friday, it would almost assuredly increase attendance as coaches would get to scout their next opponent and fans could do the same.

Another idea would to have 1A, 3A and 5A games on Friday and 2A, 4A and 6A games on Saturday and follow that pattern throughout the playoffs and the finals. Then on alternating years, switch it and play the odd class games on Sat and the even class games on Fri. This would allow fans in every area to have a choice of what games to watch and see games on Fri and Sat of every weekend. As a matter of fact, those Saturday games would give potential for afternoon and evening games alike, which would increase attendance even more in areas where multiple teams are still alive in different classes.

The old system is much better than the current system.

0-10 vs 10-0 ?

As was aluded to in another thread, 60+ point blowouts do NOTHING for either of the two programs involved or for high school football in general.

What are you talking about? I am merely talking on here about the topic of this thread and the last time I checked its about FOOTBALL. So if it makes you feel good about yourself by attacking a Baseball program and people associated with it so be it. A true Highlands fan would never attack another Highlands program on here and call them "terrible"

WOW! Its just not good spirit and doesnt send the right message to the kids viewing this site especially your own students.

If there were inter-district playoffs, Class A teams in western Kentucky would have to play schools from the Louisville area in the first round of the playoffs.

Reason #523 why six classes stinks ...

In southern Illinois, playoff games are usually held on Saturday afternoons, and it makes for a great atmosphere. You have people tailgating, and the weather is usually nicer during the day than it is at night.

I would love that sort of idea, but you could never do it unless coaches agree to make all the teams in each class play on the same day. Many coaches would likely feel a team that plays on Friday might have an advantage if their opponent in the next round plays on Saturday.

I wasn't attacking anyone. Fact of the matter is that our baseball program was in terrible shape years ago. I know it and you know it. And the baseball players at Highlands viewing this site would agree with me. Its why we've gone out and got a new baseball coach (who is doing wonders for the program). Its a whole new ball game now and our baseball program is in much better shape.

And I was a Highlands fan when you were still loading up diapers, so don't give me any of that garbage either.:p

Fact of the matter is that in almost all, if not all, other sports all the teams make the playoffs. Its inconsistent to support the "all in" for some sports and not others. Hope that clears up your confusion.:D

Personally, I'd like to see this week's playoff matchups in western Kentucky in the old four-class system, with these possibilities:

Class 4A

Marshall County at Owensboro

Daviess County at Graves County

Class 3A

Hopkinsville or Warren East at Lone Oak

Calloway County at Bowling Green

Class 2A

Paducah Tilghman vs. Glasgow or Trigg County

Caldwell County at Fort Campbell

Class A

Russellville or Metcalfe County at Fulton City

Mayfield at Russellville or Metcalfe County

Can't do anything about the six classes. However, westsider last year posted what the playoffs would have been under the old cross-district format.

Under the old way, crossing districts and playing adjoining district champs for the region champs (1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8), here is what you would have this week:

1A

Mayfield at Louisville Holy Cross

Bethlehem at Fulton City

Trimble County at Beechwood

Bellevue at Frankfort

Campbellsville at Lexington Christian

Raceland at Williamsburg

Paintsville at Hazard

Cumberland at Pikeville

2A

Trigg County at Fort Campbell

Heath at Owensboro Catholic

Bardstown at Green County

Metcalfe County at Danville

Cov. Holy Cross at DeSales

CAL at Newport Catholic

Middlesboro at Prestonsburg

Shelby Valley at Corbin

3A

Union County at Russellville

Edmonson County at Paducah Tilghman

North Oldham at Central

Elizabethtown at Henry County

Estill County at Somerset

Garrard County at Breathitt County

Sheldon Clark at Russell

Mason County at Belfry

4A

Franklin-Simpson at Lone Oak

Calloway County at Warren East

North Bullitt at Valley

Fairdale at Marion County

Boyle County at Franklin County

Harrison County at Lexington Catholic

Greenup County at Bell County

Rockcastle County at Boyd County

5A

Christian County at Bowling Green

Warren Central at Owensboro

Oldham County at John Hardin

Doss at Anderson County

Johnson Central at Highlands

Montgomery County at Covington Catholic

Pulaski County at Letcher Central

Clay County at Lincoln County

6A

Nelson County at Daviess County

Meade County at Marshall County

Fern Creek at St. X

Manual at Male

Ryle at Trinity

Ballard at Boone County

Shelby County at Dunbar

Madison Central at Henry Clay

First of all, Very Nice work! :thumb:

However these really wouldn't be the same matchups, because we probably would have had some different teams playing in the 2nd round of the playoffs than now. Since there really is no guarntee that these same teams would have won in the 1st round...
