Football playoffs: The old system

Featured Replies

Can't do anything about the six classes. However, westsider last year posted what the playoffs would have been under the old cross-district format.

Under the old way, crossing districts and playing adjoining district champs for the region champs (1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8), here is what you would have this week:

1A

Mayfield at Louisville Holy Cross

Bethlehem at Fulton City

Trimble County at Beechwood

Bellevue at Frankfort

Campbellsville at Lexington Christian

Raceland at Williamsburg

Paintsville at Hazard

Cumberland at Pikeville

2A

Trigg County at Fort Campbell

Heath at Owensboro Catholic

Bardstown at Green County

Metcalfe County at Danville

Cov. Holy Cross at DeSales

CAL at Newport Catholic

Middlesboro at Prestonsburg

Shelby Valley at Corbin

3A

Union County at Russellville

Edmonson County at Paducah Tilghman

North Oldham at Central

Elizabethtown at Henry County

Estill County at Somerset

Garrard County at Breathitt County

Sheldon Clark at Russell

Mason County at Belfry

4A

Franklin-Simpson at Lone Oak

Calloway County at Warren East

North Bullitt at Valley

Fairdale at Marion County

Boyle County at Franklin County

Harrison County at Lexington Catholic

Greenup County at Bell County

Rockcastle County at Boyd County

5A

Christian County at Bowling Green

Warren Central at Owensboro

Oldham County at John Hardin

Doss at Anderson County

Johnson Central at Highlands

Montgomery County at Covington Catholic

Pulaski County at Letcher Central

Clay County at Lincoln County

6A

Nelson County at Daviess County

Meade County at Marshall County

Fern Creek at St. X

Manual at Male

Ryle at Trinity

Ballard at Boone County

Shelby County at Dunbar

Madison Central at Henry Clay

I always liked the old system. IMHO, they need to go back, then each year pair up the Region Winners on a rotating basis.

That's assuming the listed teams would have won their first game. Can't be certain of that. For example under the old system, wouldn't Johnson Central had to have beat CovCath? The way CovCath is playing, that might not have happened and if not, the second round would be the same as it is this year.

With every change there are winners and losers. As I understand the football coaches are making a big push to return it next year to last year's system. Personally, I'm not in favor of going back. I've yet to hear a valid reason for doing something in football that's different from the other sports. You have district champions advance in basketball for example before they start playing teams from other districts.

There can be no doubt that the current system saves schools money. For example, does anyone think that Montgomery would have brought a big crowd to Highlands last week? I know that Scott didn't either, but fortunately the transportation costs for Scott were a lot less than it would have been for Montgomery Co. And my guess is that even fewer Scott fans would have traveled to Woodford Co than attended the game at Highlands, but Scott would have had a higher transportation cost.

To me, it just makes economic sense to leave it as is. But my guess is that someone is going to criticize my logic as being all about the money. Guess what? Most schools are very concerned about money and their sports programs and they should be.

Why not do away with the round all together and just advance the #1 + #2 ?

We've won a state championship as a 3 seed. And if CovCath was to beat us this week (which I don't think will happen), I'd say they'd have a real shot of doing the same. In tough districts, a 3 seed can be a very good team.

If my bracket is correct, CovCath and Clay County, both 3 seeds in 5A won this past weekend. Montgomery Co, a 4 seed in 5A also won. So in 3 of the 8 games in the 5A eastern bracket were won by 3 or 4 seeds. Pretty compelling reason in my opinion not to eliminate the 3 and 4 seeds.

Rockcastle County was a 3-seed also.

While it is certainly debatable whether 4 vs. 2 from each district is preferable; I'd prefer playing a sister district during the first two rounds of the playoffs as long as the decision remains to have 4.

I miss the different regional playoff games! I liked seeing other schools from louisville instead of schools i can see anytime!

Money kid. Money!!!!!!!!

Money kid. Money!!!!!!!!

Well put. If there were any other reason, the Colleges would have a playoff system. I believe that High School feels that they need to get their piece of the pie. Righfully so.

Money kid. Money!!!!!!!!

Now you go and do it. I just agree with you on another thread and I come over here and have to disagree with you if you think its the KHSAA making the money from the first round or the second round or the third round or even the fourth round. If that's what you think is motivating the KHSAA to allow 4 teams from each district to advance to the playoffs, think again. The KHSAA doesn't get one cent from any playoff game until the championship game (unlike Ohio, whose association gets the gate from all the rounds and just covers costs of the playoff teams). If you think its the schools getting the money, they do. With the host school generally (its negotiable) paying the traveling team's expenses and keeping the rest for themselves...good to have the higher seed I guess. Sometimes the schools will agree to share the gate however I'm told. Bottom line: its not the money; rather just a general philosophy that kids getting to play football another week or two is a good thing. To the extent you believe the kids playing football enjoy doing so, what's the harm in letting them get to put on the helmet an extra week or two? Its also a general philosophy as to why should football be more restrictive (playoff wise) than baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball etc where all teams make it to the playoffs. If it could be done logistics wise, I think some members of the KHSAA would prefer all football teams get into the playoffs. What does it hurt? Devalue making the playoffs? Doesn't seem to be that big of a deal with all the other sports. Why football? Heck, I'd like to see football start in February and end the last week of January. Then we could get rid of those wimpy, mamby bamby round ball sports.:D

First question above in bold. So they can get the Basketball team ready and secondly allow the grass to rest for the winter.

Second question above in bold. What can I say. Yep, everbody gets a trophy. Great Accomplishment. Tell the 0-10 teams going into that game that its an honor or something special to be in the playoffs only to go play Highlands and have them hang 70 on you and hear that big gun go off like 12 times. Someone needs to take a poll on this site and see how many 0-10 or 1 or even 3 win teams care for the current system.

So I suppose you would feel that Highlands baseball team devalued the baseball tournament when it made the playoffs a couple of years ago when they were terrible, right? And I'm sure you made a corresponding post in the baseball forum to that effect, right? And I'm sure you're writing the KHSAA to request that they amend the baseball tournament eligibility rules to permit only the top two teams in the district into the tournament, right?

And please don't give me that everybody gets a trophy crap. Nice rhetoric, but totally hollow. They are getting into the playoffs. Big blooming deal. That's no accomplishment; that's no trophy. Its only an opportunity to make an accomplishment. Nothing more; nothing less.

Very well said, Some teams take longer to come together. This is High School football. Give the underdog a chance. Everyone loves a Cinderella story!!!!!!! :ylsuper::ylsuper:

It was my understanding that the NEW playoff system was on trial for 2 years. This year being the second. I liked the old way. I would even agree that the top 2 out of each district make it.
