Do the schools get any federal money from the Homeland Security office to help defray the cost for some of the ideas that Strike3 listed? Personally I wouldn't send my children to a school that would allow the teachers to carry guns.

 

How about if the teachers had attended a police academy setting? If not, do you remove them if the school district as a school resource officer?

There is a Safe Schools grant, not sure where it comes from, that funds many of the School Resource officers and alternative school settings in districts around the state. I believe that grant has been reduced recently.

Besides giving teachers what I would consider a false sense of security, what would be the benefits of allowing them to carry guns?

 

Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent a heavily armed maniac from coming in to any venue and opening fire if that is what they set their mind to do. No matter what your security measures are, it isn't feasible that it can be prevented on a global basis.

 

The potential disaster from having armed teachers far outweighs any positives. We don't want to get the tail wagging the dog.

To be honest with you my wife and I will probably send our children to a private Christian school. I know something could still happen there, but I would have a stronger peace of mind with them being taught in a Christian school and atmosphere.

Teachers don't need to carry guns.

 

1. a student will try or succeed at getting ahold of the weapon

2. a student may bring their own gun to school

3. there may be a trigger-happy teacher that shoots at the first sign of anything wrong and kills an innocent student

 

 

The classroom is a place to teach and learn. This isn't the wild west.

For #1 and #3, do you have those same concerns for the school resource officers?

#2 is happening already so no difference there.

This may have already been posted,and I don't agree with teachers carrying weapons. But I do think there should be a firearm locked up with very limited access to people that have been thoroughly trained and extensive background checks to be used only when innocent lives have been taken.

Actually, I do know what would solve this problem, but the separation of church and state prevents that solution from being explored.

Unable to defend themselves, will happen in any setting where a random violent could occur. Any perpetrator, could walk through most public office doors, McDonald's, Banks, Groceries Stores, Post Office, Churches, etc....(I could go on) and do the same thing. Are we to call to arms, everyone in these buildings.....NO.

 

No one wants to have shooting tragedies at a school. No one wants their families harmed at school. The reality is, unless secure measures which cost significant money, are implemented in any of the settings I mentioned above, this could occur.

Unfortunately, the next thing that is going to happen will be a crazed parent coming into a school and killing teachers and probably even children. It is just the world we live in today...

Yes, but if there's a pattern, one would no longer go to that place. I don't think we want teachers quitting for safety reasons, there's already a shortage...

And surely we can all agree that there is a very disturbing, distressing pattern.

No way IMO! I taught school for 8 years and have been in some uncomfortable situations with kids that were on the edge. I think teachers with guns would bring about a lot more shootings. I do think that more police in the buildings might be an option but once again you have to work around the funding issues. This country WASTES so much money on silly stuff that I think they could produce money for a good cause such as this one. I also think they need to start cracking down on the places these kids are getting their guns.
