If teachers were allowed to carry weapons, wouldn't there be some stupid student who would feel like they had to "protect themselves" from a teacher with a gun and in return bring one?

I voted horrible idea only because there wasn't a choice that was strong enough to show my opposition to this idea.

For the record, I voted for "I don't know" what to do option.

 

Actually, I do know what would solve this problem, but the separation of church and state prevents that solution from being explored.

I would have to agree that a police presence would be the way to go. However, who pays for that?

 

I have a friend who was a policeman for a local school district. The mere presence of an officer has an amazing affect on behavior. Unfortunately the funds for paying the officer ran out and he was out of a job.

I agree on both. Officer is a great resource and changes behavior. Not enough funds out there to adequately fund it.

1 - Security guards at ingress to schools.

2 - Each student must pass through a metal detector when entering and submit to searches.

3 - High security doors, that only open from within the classroom and not via the hall.

4 - Card entries, on each door and only available to Teachers and Administrators

5 - Classroom doors locked, from the inside and equipped with panic hardware for egress.

6 - Security cameras in each class room, plus throughout the hall.

What about morphing this idea where teachers go through training to be a licensed police officer and become the school resource officers? When I mean training I would go as far as saying they would need to attend a police training academy like the one that EKU puts on. I am talking about a 18 month-2-year training program. Very difficult and hard.

That is exactly right, if you want to be safe in schools, it will come down to each District having to spend money.

 

Just like being safe at any work place, home, sporting event, grocery or daily task we do in life. Driving, cross the street, jogging....there are risks in any situation, some being controllable.

 

Guns do not offset the use of other guns, it just creates more mayhem and havoc.

Do the schools get any federal money from the Homeland Security office to help defray the cost for some of the ideas that Strike3 listed? Personally I wouldn't send my children to a school that would allow the teachers to carry guns.
