Second, I went back to read the thread again because it had me think so much about my behavior @ times.

I add my support for bubatruck's post. As a high school assistant and even more as a middle school head coach, I see the fans often confusing passion and support with degrading comments and abuse.

Great post!!!! This really struck a nerve with me after an occurence with a friend of mine who happens to be an official just this past week.

 

A parent at a frosh game from the losing team intentionally physically ran into an official after the game in a line and then proceded to verbally accost him. The frosh coach of the losing team, when learning of this later that night, called the official to apologize for the actions of the parent and showed a great deal of class in doing so. The coaches thoughts were that his team lost because they beat themselves, giving up 30 yards on unsportsmanlike conduct penalties by not controlling themselves. However, some parents/fans, have no sense or understanding of what is really going on. Anytime a penalty is called on their team, it isn't that their ACTUALLY was a penalty, it must be that the officials are trying to shaft their team. This goes on from little league on up and is shameful. Then we wonder WHY kids get kicked out of games and get unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Could it be the example we show them?!? :sssh:

 

As for those who verbally assault coaches and/or officials, ... why not walk a mile in their shoes. Go officiate a game at ANY level and see just how difficult it is. Or coach a bunch of kids and see how hard it is. Try doing either of these AND putting up with some of the parents. I can tell you that I did and it changed my perspective on officials entirely.

I agree. Sadly, much of the same could be said for how coaches are treated.

I am glad to know that I haven't made people mad with my post. I have just been upset by the behavior that I observe around me in the stands. It has gotten to the point that I really don't like to go to the games anymore except for the fact that I am there to support my loved one.

I agree with all that was said Bubba. Unfortunately you may be preaching to the choir. I have also witnessed the behavior you have written and after multiple games this season spoke with the AD. I haven't seen or heard them the last two weeks - it is amazing who is willing to yell encouragment when the negative is eliminated.

 

I think we as fans can make a difference, not through confrontation with unruly fans, but with letting those in authority know that we believe their behavior inappropriate and unacceptable. With enough comments I sure an AD or principal would throw out their own mother if she was the culprit.

Great post.:thumb: Wish I had a copy of this to hand to some fans last year. My son was a new teacher and assistant football coach. At the first game some parents and fans of where he taught were making negative comments about him. They had never even met him as he was hired right as school started. He was from out of the county and not one of the "Good old boys". Now I am a very mild manner woman....untill it involves my family. After about the 3rd comment I started giving them dirty looks....they soon got the massa veryge, but the damage had been done.

 

Gold Sunrise - My son is also a teacher - Teaching is tough enough. Take on what little "little person" did not do today in class. Then parent's complain about homework. On top of that the teacher's also coach/lead club's etc. after school. It takes a very special person to teach!!

This is a great thread Bubba. I agree with all you said I get frustrated by people who do these same things on this Site. I believe support your team and when you question acts remeber you are looking at things in hind sight. When a coach calls a play that dosen't work, or a kid makes a mistake, I am sure if they knew what the result was going to be they would do something different.

Great original post but unfortunately this is the United States, a free country. As I agree fully w/your entire post I am afraid you are wasting your breath. As we all know it only takes one to ruin everything for everyone and there is always that ONE in the crowd.

umm, I wouldn't call it wasting his breath... someone has to point out things like this, or else some people just assume everyone is ok with it....

I agree. Especially when it comes to coaches. I would seriously like to see some of these "fans" that claim they can be a better coach actually break down film, study players and plays and try to find a weakness, then try and motivate the kids each and every week to go like its the last play they will ever play. A lot of the times the parents or fans say that they can coach better than the coaches, but those coaches are on the sidelines for a reason. I think they know what they are doing.

Although I applaude you and agree 100 %, the problem with fans is deeper than just football. It starts when these kids are in T-ball an works its way up. Not knowing the rules is a huge part of the reason IMO. I make it a habbit when there is a loud mouth near me who doesn't know the rules to politely engage the people around me about the calls that the ref's make or the course of the game. Often times I'll call out the penalty ahead of time before the ref signals it, thus defusing the situation all together.
