I have attend many many football games over the years, and after the last several that I have attended I have walked away discouraged with the fans that are in the stands. Here's Why:
1. Every person that is on the field has a family. It doesn't matter if it is a Player (who are KIDS which we often forget), Coach, Ref, or a member of the chain gang....my list could go on. Often times the families are the people sitting around the 'die hard fans' that don't have anyone out on the field, just a desire to see their team play. So when things are said like "That stupid kid could have caught that pass" or "Zebra, go back to school and get some glasses." or "Come on Coach, your schemes suck I could do better than you." Think about the families that are sitting around you. These families are just as proud of their loved ones as you are of your team. Words such as the ones that I too often hear in the stands hurt the families more than they hurt the person to whom it is directed. Unless you are standing over the fence yelling it the only people that are going to hear it are the people who are there to support the people you are yelling at. One more point here, small children attend the games and cursing everytime a ball is dropped or a bad call happens is not making it a friendly enviroment for the kids that just want to come and see a game.
2. Why are we yelling 'at' the teams that we are there to support? True fans should yell 'for' the team. The grim truth (which no one wants to hear or admit) is that passes that should have been caught will be dropped, balls fumbled, the defense will give up yards and the coaches will make questionable calls. What about yelling encouraging things? Yelling at our teams is just as bad as Booing your team.
3. Finally, too often we all forget that it is a game especially since it is a High School game. These kids are suppost to have a good time, and they are amatures. Wouldn't you rather them learn how to be good winners AND good losers and learn skills that will help them in life for years to come? When we take the fun out of it for them we are taking away the chance for them to learn valuable lessons. Except for ones like "gosh I wish my dad wouldn't yell and harass my coaches like that'
Maybe I am way off base here but...I am just calling it like I see it.
