bubatruck
I have attend many many football games over the years, and after the last several that I have attended I have walked away discouraged with the fans that are in the stands. Here's Why: 1. Every person that is on the field has a family. It doesn't matter if it is a Player (who are KIDS which we often forget), Coach, Ref, or a member of the chain gang....my list could go on. Often times the families are the people sitting around the 'die hard fans' that don't have anyone out on the field, just a desire to see their team play. So when things are said like "That stupid kid could have caught that pass" or "Zebra, go back to school and get some glasses." or "Come on Coach, your schemes suck I could do better than you." Think about the families that are sitting around you. These families are just as proud of their loved ones as you are of your team. Words such as the ones that I too often hear in the stands hurt the families more than they hurt the person to whom it is directed. Unless you are standing over the fence yelling it the only people that are going to hear it are the people who are there to support the people you are yelling at. One more point here, small children attend the games and cursing everytime a ball is dropped or a bad call happens is not making it a friendly enviroment for the kids that just want to come and see a game. 2. Why are we yelling 'at' the teams that we are there to support? True fans should yell 'for' the team. The grim truth (which no one wants to hear or admit) is that passes that should have been caught will be dropped, balls fumbled, the defense will give up yards and the coaches will make questionable calls. What about yelling encouraging things? Yelling at our teams is just as bad as Booing your team. 3. Finally, too often we all forget that it is a game especially since it is a High School game. These kids are suppost to have a good time, and they are amatures. Wouldn't you rather them learn how to be good winners AND good losers and learn skills that will help them in life for years to come? When we take the fun out of it for them we are taking away the chance for them to learn valuable lessons. Except for ones like "gosh I wish my dad wouldn't yell and harass my coaches like that' Maybe I am way off base here but...I am just calling it like I see it. football fever
Nice post, only were not playing Tennis or Golf, Were playing a barbaric game of crash-em, smash-em brutal exciting football, where the fans get a little barbaric at times also. I hear what your saying, but don't really think most of what comes out of some peoples mouth during this gladiation is meant to hurt anyones feelings. It's the most emotional enviroment most of us are exsposed to and unfortunately some worse than others exspress their emotions in a less than positive way. As always in todays society we must take the good with the bad and hope all continue to learn from our exsperiences.
GRIDMANIAC
A huge portion of these fans that are unruly never played the game,or any other sport for that matter! If they did the would keep their mouths shut.My oldest son who now plays in college, cannot stay in the stands during his little brother's game because it bothers him to hear the uneducated fans mouthing about a game they do not understand.Bravo for this post Bubbatruck! NothingTrivial
Amen to that, up at Bell often times a few people forget this, but all in all it is a good crowd. I would like to thank the fans from Volunteer HS in TN for the great sportmanship they all showed at the bell county game a few weeks ago. Even when bell was scoring these people were standing up applauding and cheering there players along with bells on....very classy group of people. Great post.:thumb: Wish I had a copy of this to hand to some fans last year. My son was a new teacher and assistant football coach. At the first game some parents and fans of where he taught were making negative comments about him. They had never even met him as he was hired right as school started. He was from out of the county and not one of the "Good old boys". Now I am a very mild manner woman....untill it involves my family. After about the 3rd comment I started giving them dirty looks....they soon got the massage, but the damage had been done.

I think you would change your tune if your son or daughter or grandson or granddaughter are out on the field, court, etc, and some nut from the stands yells out to them with some unpleasantries! And when that person is yelling in front of one of your infants - that would certainly change your feelings. Football is a contact sport - not a Roman barbaric fight to the death. I don't accept taking the good with the bad. I would just like the bad not attending. Perhaps they, the bad, can get ahold of Michael Vick for some Friday night entertainment! Excellent observation & post , I must admit that I could be one of those that you mentioned in your post about saying things in the heat of the moment without thinking first. This post will be a good reminder for me to think before I say things that I shouldn`t.
