At the same time, when a team loses 4-0, it's hard to blame the goalie....I'm sure the defenders and mid-fielders, weren't on the top of their game, if Brazil scored 4 times.

 

A player rarely gets a chance to score, unless they've outmaneuvered their opponent in soccer.

Normally, I would agree with you, but its a little different in soccer. Once you break your "psyching" by switching goalies, giving up an own goal, and losing a player - you can stick a fork in yourself, because you're done. Soccer is alot like football - emotions are huge. The last 2 goals were scored when it was 11 to 10 players on the field.

Honestly, the more I think about it, could this be the dumbest coaching move in the history of coaching? I cannot think of anything that comes close to it. Only thing I can remotely think of that is similar is Doug Flutie being replaced by Doug Johnson in the first round of the playoffs in 1999. Wade Phillips was the coach I believe. Flutie had brought the wrath all season long and then Johnson was given an opportunity in the Wild Card round.

He made several dumb moves the whole tournament, like substiuting the wrong players when others was desperatley in need of rest.

One thing is they gave up 2 first half goals, then got the bad call and lost a player, which was very bad.

So if Solo holds them scoreless in first half, which def. would be possible, play the second half ona even playing field and who knows, maybe it doesn't matter. But Solo has been as good as anybody in the event and to bench her is dumb.

Hope Solo had some harsh words for her coach too...can't say I blame her.

In soccer one goal can end your run. I believe when the team was told of the change that had to be a negative on the mental aspect for the other players. You just don't try to out think or out coach your self. I have watched... even taped the games and was sick when I saw the change.

 

WE all have played games where in the warm ups you have a bad feling when a coach pulls something like this. He needs to be fired and they can hire me.

I could tell by the interview of Hope Solo that this change destroyed the US team's mentality. They were all in disbelief and went into the game focused on the change.

How many 0-0 ties in regulation have there been in the history of soccer? I'd say a couple:rolleyes:. No matter what the offense is doing, shutting out the opponent is key. So I'd say goalie is important.
