I'm inclined to go against any playoff format that uses power rankings and/or some kind of point system to determine who advances to the postseason.

 

Kentucky's district system is the way to go, but the number of classes and number of teams getting to the playoffs are too high.

 

OK, I can agree with what you've said. So lets do away with the point system, and go strictly on Head-to-Head competition. It seem like you want to change the playoff format, the number of teams making the playoff, but your sticking point is any point system. So, now it's gone, what else do we need.

 

What can anyone add to make this, mythical, new playoff system better. We now have the two best team from each district heading to the playoffs, using head-to-head competition only. So, that is 16 teams per class, instead of the 32 that we have now, and all of this is decided in the regular season. With the two intra-district playoff games eliminated.

I think if we downsize by one class and make a five class system with the large schools and sucessful schools that want to be in the class 5A making up a smaller class than the other four kentucky football would be much better. Also to make the regular season meaningful decrease the number of teams that make the playoffs from four to two. In my opinion this would remedy the problem.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on, only one 2A team not making the playoffs this year. One team. I agree that around 50% should make the playoffs. With two teams from each district, I would say that would be between 40% and 50%. If you could make the playoffs, you could at least say you were in the top 50% of your class.

This is the first year for the new alignment. I think that we should give it atleast an entire season before we shred it and start from scratch. I am not so sure it didn't even out the playing field. Of course some may feel as I do that it takes a little away from the 4A system of being one of the best 4 teams in the state who arguably could all 4 play each other and have a decent game; but think about what this is really about. MONEY!!!! Six divisions means more money and much more revenue to the KHSAA. More playoff games, more state games, more money! Its just another example of how high school has taken one step closer to the college bowl system. Oh wait, did I say I was for this? I think that it would be more meaningful if it were based on a power ranking as well like OHIO.

That is why I mentioned Michigan and having to have 6 wins to make the playoffs. If you make the playoffs in a format like that you deserve it. In addition to that, I don't think you see the first round BLOWOUTS, that we have. Let's face it. If a team in a 4 school district goes 0-10, they do not deserve to be in any playoffs. Period. Whether it be basketball, football, baseball or ring toss. They do not deserve even a snowball's chance of pulling off a stunning upset as one that was mentioned earlier in this thread. If you couldn't perform and weren't motivated enough to win in the regular season, why be given that chance?

Why don't we go to a 12 game season with only an 8 team playoff for one single championship and in addition a series of bowls scattered across the state each with there own requirements. Requirements would primarily consist of school size and location and success on the field. Maybe one bowl would pit the best under 500 student school in EKY vs the best under 500 student school in WKY. All programs would have something to play for, there would be one legitiamite champion and it would allow all teams who want to play each other the ability to do so as well as the additional games would add more revenue.

Huh????????????????????????????????????????? Are you serious? Please tell me that you are joking.

In my opinion, in order to have true championships that mean something, there should be only 3 divisions, based on number of male enrollment, and no moving up. There would be plenty of in state competition for all levels and winning a 65+ team division is a real state title.

 

The current system is so watered down it is almost a joke.

Sorry, but since when did allowing teenagers a chance to succeed and play football a couple more weeks a year fall behind some people's feelings of a state championship not being worthy??? How is the current system going to make football in this state worse? Kids get to practice football for a few weeks more a year, play a few more games a year, and be excited about winning a game or two in the playoffs. For the traditional powerhouses, the first two rounds are "meaningless". But, to the teams that are not and never will state championship material, getting to the playoffs or even the second round is something that is meaningful to them, their community, and their school.

 

If you win a state championship in any sport, it is a major accomplishment. Just because every school does not have wrestling, tennis, soccer, etc., does that mean that those schools that have won championships in those sports aren't truly champions??

 

Most kids will never get the chance to play again after high school. As fans/coaches, we all should appreciate the kids that are still playing athletics. There has been a major change in kids (I believe parents are much to blame) that have decided to not play anything. That could be due to being lazy, burnout, other interests, etc.

 

I was lucky enough to play high school football at a small school that had brief success. We won 39 games in my four years and "earned" a trip to the playoffs all four years, winning one regional championship, losing in the finals of another, and being defeated by the eventual state champion in the region semi-finals.

 

I could only hope for kids to have the success that I was able to have in my four-year high school football playing career. Let's allow the kids to enjoy some level of success. Your school and another school may have differences in opinion on what a successful year is.

ThrowItDeep, I agree with a lot of your post. And I am glad you had a lot of success as a high school football player and have many good memories. I don't think anyone is trying to take away those feelings of success and those memories for other student/athletes. What most of use are talking about is making football more competitive in the state, thusly giving more players a chance of being prepared to play collegent football. I know most players will not get to play college football, but I think you will agree that more players from your, as well as my, area are getting that opportunity. I am not picking on the schools that have not went deep in the playoffs, my school does not go deep in the playoffs, many years in the past it was an accomplishment for Raceland to make the playoffs. But, it was an accomplishment.

 

My main concern with the current format, where virtually everyone makes the playoffs, is this. I have heard coaches/players say that certain players would not be playing in some district games, so they will not get beat up, and the excuse is that we will have to play that team again in the playoffs anyway. I have heard this from multiple schools. They are basically possibly sacrificing a district game. Now, some people would say this is smart, why take a chance of hurting you best play makers in a game that essentially does not matter. You will make the playoffs anyway. Now, several years ago, you would not hear of such a thing, teams needed to win as many district games as possible, or they may not make the playoffs.

 

Like you, I experienced success at high school football. We won a large majority of our games. We had to qualify for the playoffs, which we did 3 out of the 4 years I played. My sophomore year we did not qualify, trust me I did not like that feeling, and we made sure that did not happen again. It gave us motivation to play harder to make the playoffs. We were not going to be good enough to win a state championship, but making the playoffs was a major accomplishment, and that was our goal. I feel like we accomplished something every year we made the playoffs. I think you should have a feeling of accomplishment when you make the playoffs, and right now that is gone from high school football in Kentucky.

That's fine, but it would make the playoffs more special if they weren't playing the "same old" district rivals in the first two rounds.
