Best post on this subject ever!

I agree completely.

The change works out for everyone. Players, coaches, schools, the KHSAA, fans, and the uprising interest in football in Kentucky.

Amen and amen!

Option 1: The two top teams from each district going to the playoffs. This will be decided using head-to-head competition from the regular season district games. This will give us 16 teams from each class going to the playoffs, instead of the 32 teams we currently have (roughly 50% of the teams in each class). This will eliminate the two intra-district games and District 1's District champion will play District 2's District Runner-up and District 2's District Champion will play District 1's District Runner-up and so on.

To implement this, we only have to do away with the first two playoff games and use head-to-head results to determine a District Champion and a District Runner-up.

I love this idea, when I heard that kentucky was moving to a 6 class system this was what I assumed would happen, but like usual I was wrong. Ram is this for fun or do you plan to submit this as a proposal to the KHSAA?

This is a discussion by the BGP members on how we would like to see the football playoff format changed. I would like for someone with more clout then me, to submit it to the KHSAA, or even better I would like for members of the KHSAA to read this thread and take it under advisement. That will probably not happen, but that is what I wish would occur. Maybe theguru will hand deliver it, that would be nice.

Go to the thread, "Dear KHSAA, (addendum)" and vote for your favorite option.

That's fine, but it would make the playoffs more special if they weren't playing the "same old" district rivals in the first two rounds.

I agree. I liked it the old way, it sets up some really great matchups. It also gives a team that may be the 4th best in their district to play 2 games. It also makes for very interesting 2nd and 3rd round matchups. Example CCH-HHS regional final a few years ago.

I just wish the playoff situation would return to how it used to be, where district 1 would play district 2 in the first 2 rounds.

:thumb: The highlighted statement sums it all up imo.

Old rambler, while you are certainly entitled to your opinion, I need to point out that I really don't see how going to more classes or allowing more teams in the playoffs generates more money for the KHSAA. First of all, the additional playoff games generated by more teams making the playoffs will not generate any additional money for the KHSAA. The KHSAA does not get one penny from ANY of the playoff games until the state championship. Thus zero dollars for the KHSAA from the additional playoff games caused by the additional teams making the playoffs.

There will be two additional championship games. However, based on what I've been told, given the costs involved of renting the stadium for the additional time, the payment of security for the additional time, renting the "big screen" and paying the people to operate it the additional time, etc, etc., etc., the KHSAA feels it will be lucky to break even for the additional two games. Trust me, the administration at the KHSAA already had a very long day when there were two games a day. They are certainly NOT looking forward to having to plan, coordinate and attend three games a day.

I know people like to slam the KHSAA every opportunity they can (and I've certainly taken my shots when I think appropriate), but the criticism that the decision to allow more teams in the playoffs and to create more classes was for the almighty dollar is not accurate.

After a productive BGP debate/discussion, I have modified the original proposal to what, appears to be, a majority of the posters were looking for, and have come up with two options.

Option 2: Have a Championship Tournament. Everyone makes the playoffs and play a single elimination tournament to crown a State-Champion in each class. Every team will get to play at least an additional game, maybe more, and have an opportunity to upset a district/regional rival. Some may say this will take to long, but really it will only add a few games to the current playoff format. Currently 32 teams, from each class make the playoffs, and Class 1A has a total of 41 teams, Class 2A has a total of 33 teams, Class 3A has a total of 39 teams, Class 4A has a total of 35 teams, Class 5A has a total of 37 teams, and Class 6A has a total of 36 teams. So, going from 32 to about 38 teams, on the average would not add that many games to each class's playoff format.

To implement this we only have to add the additional 1-9 teams to the playoff bracket and let them play until we have a State Champion.

So, what do you think Option 1 or Option 2, which would make Kentucky Football better?

First of all Option 2 is for all the soccer moms that want all kids to play equal time and get a snack after the game, IMHO.

Let's talk about option 1. Eliminating 8 of the first round games per class means that KHSAA is out 48 games' revenue from the current plan. Please don't kid yourself to think that the district plan in the playoffs is to keep the kids close in the first 2 weeks. It is to keep the travel expenses down that reimburse the schools. I don't think they are going to cut out that week. because while 1 plays 4 and , and 2 plays 3 and then the winners play means the district teams split the net proceeds among the 3 games, not just the 1 vs 2 proposed. So the 29 teams that don't make the playoffs now become 29 plus 96 ( 6 classes x 16 teams) or 125 that currently split the pie. In section G of the financial report is the amount set aside for non participating schools by vote of ALL schools per Constitution, Article VII, Section 2. Do you think that Butler High School wants to reduce the money they receive for X to play Manual?

Now if you don't think the travel expenses come into play then I have another proposal. Throw out the District 1 vs District 2 format and make it a seeded tournament. 1 seed vs 32 seed ( or 1 vs 16 in your proposal) Now in 6A first round it is George Rogers Clark(0-4 currently, please don't PM me!) at St X rather than Butler playing St X for a second time. Now the regular season becomes important as teams try to better their seed, just like the college 1-AA and below playoffs. Now that team seeded 16th needs to win on week 10 to keep the home game. Now a lot of teams play different teams.

Now Manual ( or St X), who may be ranked number 4 in the state doesn't go home after the 2nd round. They could advance to the semifinals and the final 4 teams could be the best four teams. What if the semifinals this year was X against Henry Clay and Trinity against Manual? How about making sure Bowling Green and Highlands are seeded to the opposite sides?

What do we use for seeding? Good luck!

With all due respect, Option 2 stinks ...

West, I was in your camp not all that long ago. After I married, I began to follow a team in Indiana in addition to the Kentucky team I follow. At first it seemed crazy every team made the playoffs, and to make it worse there is a blind draw to determine pairings. Often the top two teams in a district draw each other in the first game while two winless teams pair off on the other side of the bracket. Luck of the draw, but I guess if a team is going to be district champ they would have to beat the better teams sooner or later. The odd result is that there are often blowouts in the second and third round instead of the first. You still end up with the better teams advancing deeper into the playoffs though.

The way I understand the Indiana system, you aren't required to play anybody in your district. This could save on travel time and travel money (or maybe not if the local schools won't schedule you).

The argument against the all in format is it makes the regular season worthless. But this is how it works in basketball, baseball, and soccer. Why not football?

Never considered myself a soccer mom.

When I started this thread, I would have agreed with you. Like I said before, most of these ideas came from people who posted in this thread, and had some good points and provided good discussion. Back to Option 2: Like I said, I would have agreed with you, but looking at the numbers almost all the teams make the playoffs now. Mountain Thunder said he would like 50% or 100% of the teams to make the playoffs. I can see his point. Currently around 90% make the playoffs, with only one team in 2A not making the playoffs. I don't know if the playoff format has to do with KHSAA making money, or the schools making money, or not. But, if it does, as some have said, then this will add another round to the playoffs and generate more money, for someone. Plus, you won't have just 1,2,3 or 4 teams in each class not making the playoffs. As previously stated, Indiana does it with almost twice as many teams, so it is possible. Really this Option is not much different then what is done now. Roughly 32 teams out of 38 teams in each class make the playoffs now, why not go ahead and let the other six teams in to and make it all inclusive.

Let's talk about option 1. Eliminating 8 of the first round games per class means that KHSAA is out 48 games' revenue from the current plan. Please don't kid yourself to think that the district plan in the playoffs is to keep the kids close in the first 2 weeks. I have thought the same thing. Money. Money for the schools and money that the KHSAA will lose. To me this is a good argument for Option 2, all the district teams are in the tournament and all district teams are playing each other in the first round. District game are generally close with short travel times, all schools have local district rival games with big crowds, and no one leaves the district bracket until you have a district champion. Only one team, that wins the district, would have to travel to another district.

To me, this would be a great option, I think the NCAA 1AA and down have a great playoff format, and the best team normally wins. But, I think, you as well as me, know that this will never happen. Back to the travel time and expense. With this you would, mostly, have the best two teams in the finals, and best four teams in the semi-finals. But, like I said, we know that this will never happen. And the seeding thing goes back to a Power Ranking or Point System, and the people who have posted in this thread have been very animate about not wanting any kind of Point System.

Good feedback jimmyref, thanks for providing to the tread, and thanks for giving solid, well though out information.

I, like you, would have never been for a all inclusive playoff format before this thread. But, after the discussion and research, I find myself liking it more and more. Like we have been saying 90% of the teams in each class are in the playoffs now, why not let the other 10% in and make it what it is. I just can't see why one 2A and 3 or 4 teams from all the other classes can't be in to. If we had a format like Option 1 where 50% of the teams make the playoffs it would be different, but we currently let 90% in, so adding the other 10% would only add one week and everyone would have a mythical chance, and everyone would have at least one more game.

I just want to throw my two cents in on this topic. I reading the posts here it is apparent that the playoffs are money motivated by the KHSAA. Therefore lets not upset the apple cart. Here is my idea.

Two top teams from each district make the playoffs in all six classes. During the first week of the playoffs the winners go to a winners bracket and the losers go to the losers bracket. Now the brackets are set for the playoffs. You lose you go home. The top two teams from the winners bracket play for the State Championship. The top two teams from the losers bracket play for bragging rights. One thing is for sure KHSAA will still see $$$$$ and thats what its about.

I was wondering were you have been, haven't see a post in awhile. I can see your format, more games. I was really surprised at the stats for how many teams from each class are making the playoffs right now, average of 90% per class. That just amazes me.
