July 19, 200719 yr Getting attention of the fans, recruits, and media is exactly why he did what he did. He got my attention too but you won't catch me at a UC game this year...

July 20, 200719 yr "Why would we go to Newport, Rhode Island, to do a story on Haruki Nakamura when we've already done stories on him from here? When Media Days are held in Newport, Kentucky, instead of Newport, Rhode Island, we'll be there with bells on, and I'll buy the pizza." I like this quote:

July 20, 200719 yr Ditto. :thumb: I don't know. While I'm a UK football fan and will be spending Saturdays either at Highlands JV games or at Centre, if I have some free Saturdays, I'll try to catch a game or two. I like this guy's excitement and style of play. He's a firey guy and if he deals with the press issue this way, can you imagine what he's like as a coach? If I was playing for him, I'd really like the aggressiveness and enthusiasm he possesses. I think UC is on the cusp of becoming a very good football program. And you have to admit, once you get into the stadium, Nippert is a great place to watch a game. I think its one of the neater stadiums that I've been to, much better than Commonwealth or PJ.

I think Nippert has a traditional feel to it, but I'd much rather watch a game at PJ or C'wealth. There is far more of a College Football Atmosphere in those places. If I have a "free Saturday", going to a game at Nippert would require it be a GREAT opponent and truly nothing else going on.
July 21, 200719 yr I like his comments. Don't know the cost of hiring a free-lance writer (having no idea what their price is) compared to the expense of sending a staff member, but I can't see that it would be that much to send someone there and it be a concern of the budget. I see it more as the Enquirer not caring which is sad since it is a "hometown" school. Just my opinion though.

What news comes out of Media Day? The only news that comes out is that the paper wasn't there to cover an event that has no news.
July 22, 200719 yr I'm a bit torn on both sides of this issue. I can see why Kelly went this route, but also fully understand why there is no real need to send a beat writer up to cover nothing. In the media the biggest thing that comes out of these "events" is building a little rapport with the opposing coaches you will need to talk to for the game week stories on the horizon. UC football isn't a big deal yet. Get them there and it's funny how these things work out...
July 23, 200719 yr No bigger waste of print space that coverage of conference media day. If the Enquirer is watching expenses, I have no problem with their decision. I think Kelly understands that but is wanting to support his boys. I'd probably do the same. And Gannett is always watching expenses. Did they use a stringer or did a Gannett outpost in that area step in, as per usual? That said, conference media days are a good chance to get some networking done and lay some groundwork for the future.
