July 17, 200719 yr Let me start off by saying that I own a gun. I would be worried about a gun in my house that I did not know about. Here is a scenario that I have seen...a sister with a 5 and 6 year old visits her brothers house. The brother has roommates. An hour or so into the visit, the kids walk into the living room with a .38 special (loaded) that they had found in the bedside table of one of the roommates. The brother didn't know there was a gun in the house. Now, this could have ended tragically...and it could have been avoided. Lock the door to your room, keep your gun in a safe (I don't like this...if a robber breaks in in the middle of the night, will he pause to let me get my gun out of the safe?) I keep my gun a little better hid than in this situation, but it is loaded and ready to go. When I have company with kids, I unload it AND lock it in my safe. When they leave, I load it and put it back. If the first roommate had known, he might have been a little more vigilant (hopefully) in making sure that they kids did not go into the room where the gun was. That's what speedloaders are for. If it's a semi-auto, don't keep the clip in and make sure that the guns are completely out of reach of young kids. There are also gun locks that are very quick to release.

July 17, 200719 yr Let me ask this. If I'm having someone over for the weekend, or just having a party, should I divulge to them that I have a gun? I know it's not the same as living with someone; I just want to get your thoughts. Would you be troubled to find out later that I owned several guns?No, you have no obligation to inform your company, unless you plan on bringing the weapons out. As far as the roommate issue, it depends on one thing. Who's name is on the lease. If its my apartment and I share it with another, then they better let me know they have a gun. One good reason for not letting someone know you have a handgun is to keep others from messing with it.
July 17, 200719 yr It really just depends I suppose on the situation. I've been in several houses with guns including my own. I don't mind it, but don't see the need for them to ever really be seen by others. When we went on spring break I found out a day or so into the trip that one of the others had his gun with him. I wasn't really alarmed at all, he'd worked at a jail before, and had it simply for protection in case something crazy happened. It never did, and I don't think I ever saw the gun that entire trip. Did I benefit from knowing we had a gun on the trip, maybe one night when some crazy locals tried to start some stuff, I wasn't as scared, but the gun was never brought into the picture. Would I have been just as fine if the gun had been there the whole time and I hadn't known, yes. Might've been a little awkward if I accidentally found it but that's about it. Anyhow, I'd say each situations different, and who, how, and when the gun owner tells others should be at their discretion.

I have a concealed-carry, and had a gun at my apartment and in my car that only 1 of my 3 roommates knew about - why? because people - young men in general tend to drink and not have the best judgment at that time.

It was funny, around 5pm yesterday I went with my gf back home to grab some things. All the local stations had news vans there and everyone was standing outside. I felt like a celebrity when we pulled up and you could see everyone start to point and whisper. We went in the house and it took all of 10 seconds for the doorbell to ring. I went out and spoke with reporters for a minute but declined to be on camera.
