July 17, 200719 yr So, because he didn't mention he owned a gun, he must be a raving lunatic? I would be a bit leery of someone who keeps a gun hidden from his roommates. It’s probably not for home defense as much as it is for drug defense. I’ll vouch for OR too, I’ve shown him the vast arsenal of weaponry strategically located throughout my house and he will still come over.

Because someone doesn't announce to the world that they are a gun owner, that makes them a drug user/pusher???

Why is it that they're always a nut or a criminal? Maybe he just never thought about mentioning it because to him it really wasn't an issue?
July 17, 200719 yr Author See, that's ridiculous IMO. Why is it that they're always a nut or a criminal? Maybe he just never thought about mentioning it because to him it really wasn't an issue? My girlfriend just moved into the house 3 months ago. The other roommate had known, but forgotten, the other roommate had a gun. It's something you don't play with everyday, so you don't always think to mention it. I'm glad her roommate had a gun, even if I didn't know about it.

July 17, 200719 yr Author Updating the story, the police believe they know who the guys are that broke in. I'm not sure what is stopping them from being arrested, but it's at least a relief to know that the suspects have been identified.

July 17, 200719 yr What a ludicrous statement!! Because someone doesn't announce to the world that they are a gun owner, that makes them a drug user/pusher??? Why would you need to keep a gun a secret, it's 100% legal. I'm just saying, like OR, I would be a bit suspicious of a roommate who didn’t want anyone to know he had a gun. I would personally have no qualms at all telling my roommates I had a gun in my room, in fact I would offer to teach them how to use it in case they ever needed to. It’s not that he has a gun, it’s that he hides it; you don’t keep your plasma screen TV in the closet with a blanket over it lest I would assume you jacked it and are planning to sell it.

July 17, 200719 yr Between us, I had one for about 8 months that my wife didn't know about. I can assure you that I'm not a drug dealer, criminal or crazy (although some will challenge this one). I just knew she'd be ticked if she knew about it... I eventually sold it...
July 17, 200719 yr With the whole owning a gun and not telling someone. It's the owners decision if he/she wants to tell the other people. It had nothing to do with what kind of person he was. You can have a gun and not tell anyone and not be a drug user/pusher. I mean by not telling anyone then you are not getting them involved in anything. What if he did tell them he had a gun, one night the other roommate got mad and tried using it, that wouldn't be good now would it.
July 17, 200719 yr I think you guys are being a bit fanatical here. When I think “roommate” I don’t think of random person, I think of a good friend I have known for a considerable time. So for them to have a gun that I didn’t know about they would 100% have to be hiding it, and yeah, that would trouble me. I doubt they were worried I knew they were competitive skeet shooters. The fact is guns are very dangerous, especially if handled improperly, and although they are legal and useful for legal activities, they are also associated with a host of illegal activities. I would find it a tad disconcerting, to say the least, to know a good friend was adamantly hiding one from me/others. Not everyone who owns a gun is a American patriot who forgot to mention it to their roommates. That appears to be the case with UKPat’s situation, but I would contend that is the exception, not the norm. This is especially true with a good friend, it is not something you "forget" to tell, and that is very much troubling to me. Maybe that is just me.
July 17, 200719 yr Let me start off by saying that I own a gun. I would be worried about a gun in my house that I did not know about. Here is a scenario that I have seen...a sister with a 5 and 6 year old visits her brothers house. The brother has roommates. An hour or so into the visit, the kids walk into the living room with a .38 special (loaded) that they had found in the bedside table of one of the roommates. The brother didn't know there was a gun in the house. Now, this could have ended tragically...and it could have been avoided. Lock the door to your room, keep your gun in a safe (I don't like this...if a robber breaks in in the middle of the night, will he pause to let me get my gun out of the safe?) I keep my gun a little better hid than in this situation, but it is loaded and ready to go. When I have company with kids, I unload it AND lock it in my safe. When they leave, I load it and put it back. If the first roommate had known, he might have been a little more vigilant (hopefully) in making sure that they kids did not go into the room where the gun was.

Not just you, but not the norm either, except from those on the anti-gun side of the aisle. I don't think anyone is being fanatical, that would be the same as us saying you were paranoid, which I don't believe you are. I just don't think many gun owners view their gun as something you need to know about nor do they even give it any thought. Not to hide something, just something that's not an issue to them.
July 17, 200719 yr Let me ask this. If I'm having someone over for the weekend, or just having a party, should I divulge to them that I have a gun? I know it's not the same as living with someone; I just want to get your thoughts. Would you be troubled to find out later that I owned several guns?
