You should go with the real deal if it's for protection. Wouldn't hurt to take a gun training course either if you’ve never handled one before, should you decide to buy one.

I basically want something that I'm not afraid to fire. I think I would hesitate in a situation like last night to fire a real gun, whereas I think I would come out, guns ablazin', aiming for the head with a BB.

All a bb gun will do is get you killed , I would go with the real thing, at least a .38 or higher. Also, there was some sound advice earlier in taking a gun shooting/safety course if you think that it would help you. Imo this would be a must for anyone that has not or is not used to shooting.

Anytime you have a gun in the house, you also need to be thinking identification. The last thing you want to do is shoot a friend/family member because you thought they were a burglar. My sister-in-law almost made this mistake when my brother came home unannounce. A .357 makes a big hole in the wall.

A BB gun will get you killed! I've been shot by a BB gun quite a few times on my drunken, stupid nights to just wake up the next morning and wonder where those small, round bruises came from! And a firearm safety or even the hunter's education course would be great for anybody who has not handled a gun very much in their life!

Uhhh....yeah. That was me. I actually handled it better than I thought I would. I think it could have been that I was more concerned with my girlfriend's safety.
