August 23, 200719 yr I do not like these Reds' announcers at all. Saying the Braves wouldn't be dangerous if they made the playoffs is ridiculous. Smoltz, Hudson, Carlyle is a pretty solid playoff roster. The truth hurts my friends.

August 23, 200719 yr Gregg was firing a bunch of rapid fire questions at him. What bothered me the most is that he asked some questions about the '08 season and Krivsky kept saying that they're getting too far ahead of themselves. Shirley Wayne's still not playing for the '07 season... Things like, "Will Freel play winter ball?" and "Where can we expect Keppinger to play next year?" He's still in the '07 season when the rest of the organization is looking at '08... I caught a replay of the exchange this morning. Very good stuff. I must admit that I was more than skeptical of both Doyel and Mo but I must admit that they do a nice job. Doyel asked exactly what the fans are asking and did not sugarcoat anything or lob softballs (Lance, pay attention). My favorite part: Doyels contention is that 07 is done and that the potential players should be up or should have been up earlier. He mentioned Kepp and how successful he's been hitting about .370 since he's been up. Krivsky responded that "maybe he's successful because he spent some time in the minors this year." Doyel said something to the effect of "well, with that thinking, you should have left him down even longer and maybe he'd be hitting .400 right now." Good stuff.

August 23, 200719 yr Sounds great...how? SS? No. 3B? No. Right-handed side of 1B platoon? Maybe, but that won't get you 400 AB's. 5th outfielder? Perhaps. He is getting a lot of doinks and bloops to drop in right now, no question, but I continue to say there are reasons he hasn't stuck in the Bigs before.... .290 with limited speed, limited pop, and limited defensive skills is a tough guy to count on. However, I love the dude and he is clearly white-hot right now. It doesn't hurt that this is the kind of guy that Average Joe Cincinnati Fan will LOVE!!! :bunny: :creepy: I failed to respond to this earlier so better late than never. How many bloops and dinks can you have and still have a .559 SLG? Lastly, your inference that he's in the Freel category would also be incorrect IMO. How can you compare a guy who has pop and is an on-base machine with a high average to a guy who is none of the above? Knee jerk much? There is a reason that a 27 year old journeyman with a .315 (off the top of my head) lifetime average hasn't stuck anywhere. Listen, I'm rooting for Keppy, I really am, but if you think he can sustain anything close to this I'm shocked. Homering once every 37 at-bats is having pop? What, maybe he hits you 12 (playing in GABP)? He is a nice contact hitter, but if you're ready to make assumptions based on 100 at-bats, than I'm shocked. I think he is a nice utility player to have for next year -- if you want / expect more than that then tell me where you're playing him everyday.

The only way you can discount a relatively high SLG% is if he also has about the same average which would mean he's a singles hitter. Obviously, Kepp is not hitting .559 so therefore he must be getting extra base hits (ie pop) in order to have a high SLG%. Can he sustain it? Don't know. I do know this. He helps this offense by getting on base A LOT - like our boy Donkey. Freel does NOT which you already know. Next year: I'm on record as saying that he's a better overall solution at SS than AGonz. I'm guessing though that I'm in the minority on that one. So, my guess is that Kepp will get a lot of ABs each week by filling in around the infield and maybe the outfield and subbing for injured players.
