I'm betting Coach Tom and his gang cannot hang with the 5A elite. But at least they now have a decent football field.

I really think everyone will be surprised how well Highlands will play this year. A ton of experience, bunched up with some unbelievable younger classes will carry the Birds deep this year.:ylsuper:

I think you guys have got it all figured out so I won't comment. So who do you think is the suprise team this year in 5A ?

I'm sorry but CovCath will struggle this coming year and you can hang your hats on last year's phenomenal SR laden state championship team all you want but things will be different.

 

I think Highlands and Bowling Green will be the top 2 teams in no particular order and Johnson Central will be right on their heels. No disrespect to the Colonels because they flat out beat everybody this past year so I am not trying to bash. Plus with their schedule being so tough, those younger guys are going to have to grow up quickly.

 

 

I really think folks are making a mistake not mentioning Dixie as one of the top 5 teams in 5A this year. Folks, Dixie is going to have an extremely talented senior class this year. I realize that some people tend to discount Dixie because they don't do spring football or two a days, but Tom is still a very good football coach. And with the talent he has amassed there, I think they'll give the Birds and the Blue Colonels all they can handle this year. Heck, if I wasn't a homer, I might even be saying that Dixie should be preseasoned ranked higher than Highlands. They have a ton of talent and experience returning; maybe more than we do.

 

While the seniors, junior and sophomores to be at Highlands have all beaten their class rivals at Dixie when they were frosh, if I recall correctly those games were all relatively tight. Wherever you rank Highlands, you should be ranking Dixie, in my opinion, right next to them.

Mercer embarrassed south Laurel last season. they also return a whole lot more than people realize. Just talked to their strength coach last week and he says the returning lineman are much bigger and stronger than last year and have had a great gains in the off-season. for those that argue that mercer will not be able to simply run toss sweep in 5A I think it can be safely argue that last year they kept it simple because they could. I expect mercers offense to evolve this year as the players are more familiar and comfortable with the staff and each other. Do I think they will be 5A state champs noway but I do expect them to win their region and battle into the playoffs. won't be long and all the questions will be answered. One other point the staff feels the monkey is off their back, the real pressure was winning last year as expected. this year there are no expectations other than to play hard and do their best.

I agree with 'Neck...Dixie just might be whistlin' this year. Look past them and it will be an "L".....Bird's will need their "A" game in this one!

Great analysis 4th and Long. You're right, Mercer will be better next year than a lot of people realize; like you, Im not predicting a state championship by anymeans, theres only a few teams across this state that can do that and come away with it, and Mercer isn't there.....YET, they will be in the mix come playoff time, but they'll have to stay healthy in the backfield, quarterback included. If that happens, they'll have as good a shot as anybody to make a run at it. Todd Davis, Mercer's Strength and Conditioning coach is as good as it gets, he's been working the kids tails off during the day, not only focusing on the core lifts and agiles, but throwing a lot of "Strong Man" lifts into the mix, the kids have apparently fallen in love with that stuff. They've got every strong man lift imagineable, except for the 747 Jet to pull..haha They do return a very good group of linemen, who were mostly all sophomores this past year. Their J.V team went 7-1, I believe, with their only loss comming to Frankfort the second game of the year, score of 8-0, or something like that, they later played Frankfort in the final game and won that rematch 46-12. The freshman team went 2-5, all 5 losses were of a 8 pts or less, and that included the likes of teams like Danville, Rockcastle County and Central Hardin (CH won their freshman league of N.Hardin, Nelson Co, John Hardin, Meade Co, etc.).

Nice analysis as always LN. The honest answer is homer it up while you can, cause it's a long way from being decided. I think that after passing camps you might have a little more info to pick our district with, but even then you'll almost have to wait untill the scrimmages to come close to being right.

 

If, and only if the Red Colonels have figured out how to right their ship since last season, they could very easily be the suprise winner of the new 5A district.

In my opinion Dixie has more talent and depth with 36 seniors returning than anybody else hands down. But we all know that talent alone doesn't win games.

 

So with that said my homer, pre season district vote will say.....

 

HHS and Dixie tied for the first

with CCH third

and Homes fourth

Ashland did take a huge hit by graduation but the Tomcats have alot of young talent that will be very hungry. IMO Ashland would be either 2nd or 3rd in the district as of now with Bryan Station being the other. I think Woodford would be 4th and Montogomery Co. 5th. I look for Bryan Station to surprise some ppl in this district this year but Ashland is Ashland so you know they are going to put forth a strong team that will demand respect.

Mercer is not top 5 unless they prove somethin against quality opponents....
