Highlands football fundraiser

Featured Replies

For the last several years, the Highlands football players have held spring fundraisers. They are not raising money for the football program; rather, it has been for other causes (last year, I think it was for MS research). This year it was for the grandmother of the freshman football/baseball player that recently passed away from brain cancer. The lady lost her husband about a week after her grandchild died. She had taken a lot of time off from work without pay to care for her grandchild and her home had become run down. Linda had been the secretary for the Jr. Football League and the Boosters for years and was one of the school's biggest fans and supporters.

The team decided to raise money for her to help improve her home. This was in addition to about 30 volunteers whom have put a new roof on her house; repaired water damage to ceilings, re-did her kitchen, put in new carpet, repainted the exterior of her home and did or are doing other projects. While all of the labor was gratis and most of the supplies and material were also, there have been some hard costs. The team raised almost $4,000 yesterday doing yard work and other projects for donors to help pay for some of the hard costs. Great job young men. You did a good thing. We're proud of you.

Impressive. What a great thing for young men to do.:thumb: :thumb:

Nice work gentlemen. There are some great people in Ft. Thomas, that's for sure...

What a great character-building activity! Congrats to the boys and, particularly, to the coaches that, I assume, set this up.

Kudos to everyone involved.

Wasn't there a mention of this in the Enquirer a while back? I seem to remember a group picture in the lady's front yard.

Outstanding effort on everyone's part.

That's way high school football is the greatest sport of 'em all!!

Great job to the Bluebirds!

That's awesome.

I think you took the words right out of Dale's mouth:D.

And while I only mentioned Highlands football activities in my original post, I'm sure that there are lots of other programs and schools that do good things like this through out the state. Each of them and their kids are to be likewise commended.

...just one of the MANY intangibles and life lessons learned through HS sports! Way to go guys! You touch more lives than you ever have a clue about!

3 of 'em at my house for 2 hours made the filling of 50 bags full of dirt & old mulch and spreading 40 bags of new mulch (bought from and delivered by the Highlands Soccer team) much easier. Good work for a good cause.

LN -- tell them there's an additional donation if they'll drop by WED night to drag the 50 bags from the garage to the curb for the Rumpke guys who are going to be thrilled with me this week!!!

NOTE: While this was hard work, the coaches were clearly also using it as a "team building" exercise. A coach dropped by during the project to check in and find out specifically what the mentees (underclassmen) had learned about the mentor (upperclassman) and vice versa.

Great job, guys!!

Great team building and community leadership event.

We are proud of our Birds!

Great Job Birds ! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

How can I get some of those boys out to my house to spread some mulch? Where do I send the check? I slipped a disc last spring shoveling mulch and I do not have any interest in trying to do that again.

I saw the kids helping out at a home on Rossford over the weekend which was really cool.
