I think people make better decisions than they are given credit for if given the chance. Just because you legalize Pot, it doesn't mean that millions of people (IMHO) will go and become big pot smokers. There are more and more people refraining from alcohol these days for many reasons -- people will do the right thing (often) if given the chance.

If your not against the outlawing of alchohol, you need to rexamine what occurred the last time we tried it coach. We can't afford to create even more black markets than already exist. Also, lets look at drug use. Is it not easier for a teenager to aquire drugs on the black market than it is for them to aquire alchohol, which requires a fake or someone to buy it for you?

I believe you can drink without getting drunk. I assume that if you smoke pot, you will get high.

 

While I am not a proponent of getting drunk or alcohol, I do understand that it takes a lot more alcohol and a lot more time of drinking to get to the point that you are not in your right mind than it does pot.

 

I would like to believe the latter but as a teacher in the classrooms I have, I don't see it. You legalize it and I fear you are telling kids that it is okay to do it. Same as we do with alcohol.

 

Kids can't stand hypocricity. And that is why they don't believe us with alcohol. It is NOT OKAY TO DO THIS until you are 21. That don't buy that. Either it's wrong or it's not. They see things in black or white, not gray.

My point is simple. If a kid wants to drive to Over the Rhine, he or she can buy heroin on any corner at any hour of the day. The availability is not the same for beer. There is no control on illegal substances besides their illegality. That is not a strong enough barrier to eliminate the market. Therefore, lets control the market.

Those that are irresponsible are going to be irresponsible regardless and those that are responsible are going to set good examples.

 

It's just like I said before, legalize it but restrict it, because you should NOT drive while high, and you should NOT let children smoke it, and it'd be completely understandable if people lose their jobs because they show up high. That happens today, and it'll happen tomorrow. Even if you tax the crap out of it it will still probably be cheaper than street-standards (I'm only guessing, I honestly don't know the value system of pot), so I don't believe that the black market for marijuana will survive.

 

I'm not saying we should end the war on drugs. I'm saying we should reset our focus to the things that are really killing people (cocain, heroin, meth, etc.). The only reason pot is a gateway drug IMO is because the shady people selling it might as well sell the other things since what they're doing is illegal in the first place.

Okay that is in the urban areas. I live in a rural area that the availability of beer is probably equal to heroin.

Only for your students who are not willing to drive an hour to Cincy. Lets face it, your students have an abnormal amount of people willing to buy them alchohol in their community. If you take the same poll, the only barrier to weed and pills in the same group is money.

No. And as for the rationale that we should legalize it so we don't have to pay to imprison those who use it, I believe that with all criminals that we have to place in jail, we should garnish the wages that they earn once they leave jail to reimburse society for the prison costs. If they don't repay the costs, they are not entitled to one red cent of any federal, state or local entitlements ever. Paying their debt to society should mean much more than just serving their time.

Pot and beer are the most prevalent, but once again, I would claim that the only barrier to the higher substances is money, whether it be money to buy or the money needed to get to the purchase. That is not the same in many areas. If kids have more availability to money, it is quite often easier to get drugs than it is to get alchohol.

So you make it legal and tax it to raise the price up to prevent people from having it, what changes? You still would have a black market selling it at lower prices to avoid the taxes.
