But no one deals with the double standard and maybe that's why people are in the uproar they are about it. Jesse Jackson made blatant racist statements that were IMVHO much worse then what Imus said and yet he is basically given a free pass and is in fact now one of the voices of "righteous indignation". The networks have perpetuated the double standard by basically knuckling under to the likes of Sharpton and Jackson so I'm sorry if I exhibit little hope that they will do anything to change it.

 

Jackson and Sharpton couldn't find enough microphones to get behind and condemn the lacrosse players at Duke a year ago, yet are the networks now pressing them for apologies for their remarks then? I know that is not what the topic of this thread is about but in my own limited mind it is a perfect illustration of the network's perpetuating the double standard and letting the standard bearers basically do what they want. It's not the fact that they are coming down on Imus that bothers me, he's a loudmouthed idiot that probably should have been fired years ago. It's the fact that the network and the sponsors basically did nothing for almost a week, until Jackson and Sharpton started whining.

Honkey, Hill Billy, Redneck and Cracker are all racial slurs used to describe people of the white race. Did BGP's word filter pick up any of those terms ? Nope.

 

I am almost certain that if you tried to post a reply that contained a racial slur to describe another race I assume the word filter would have been all over it.

I myself am arguing both points. Any type of racial language no matter what race it is directed towards shows a lack in character by the person using it. I also think that America as a whole needs to toughen up a bit. Imus made some deroatory remarks that I don't think a person of his media power should have used on a national radio level. However, the man didnt kill anyone.

 

If I were force to chose between one of the other I would lean towards Americans getting a little tougher. It life, no one said it was easy.

Let me address that as a moderator. While those terms may not be in the word filter, they are watched for by the moderators and posts using them in a derogotory fashion are edited or deleted when found. We take Rule 3 very seriously.

There are many white people, including members of this website, who consider the terms hillbilly and redneck to be badges of honor. Cracker has its own problem in that it actually means something other than a racial comment. While there may be plenty of other racial names that aren't blocked by the word filter, the "N" word never ever has a positive meaning.

It doesn't make it any less offensive, especially to many, many African Americans. You can't say a word is wrong if one man says it but its okay if another uses it.

While it has nothing to do with race and more to do with sexual preference; What if I were to post the slang word the British use to describe a cigarette ? Would that have a negative meaning ? I bet the word filter would pick it up.
