Well living in this area and getting a chance to listen to Marty everyday, I enjoy following the Reds. I won't be going out and buying a Reds hat anyday soon, but I root for them as much as the next person, unless they are playing the Cubs. : )

I think the biggest thing to be excited about in this game is the way Lohse continues to pitch.

Got back from the game a little while ago....This team is in serious trouble. They might just have the worst offense in the game....Let's take a look at the roster:

 

C:

David Ross-I could go up there blindfolded and come as close to hitting as he is. Should be looking for a job on the FA market.

 

Javier Valentine- A solid back-up catcher, since he's also a switch-hitter he's a valuable asset off the bench.

 

INF:

Jeff Conine- Just like Valentine, he's a solid platoon player who's leadership is a valuable asset.

 

Scott Hatteberg- See above on Conine.

 

Brandon Phillips- Defensively he's solid.....Offensively he's hit or miss. Not anywhere close to a 3-5 hitter, yet that's where he is on this team.

 

Alex Gonzalez- Great defensively, but offensively he's just not any good.

 

Edwin Encarnacion- Needs to play everyday....just not at the ML level right now. Liability in the field, and is just utterly lost at the plate.

 

Juan Castro- Basically a clone of A-Gone, only worse offensively.

 

OF:

Norris Hopper- Why he has a job is beyond me....absolutely terrible.

 

Adam Dunn- Defensively he's a liability. He has the ability to change a game with one swing of the bat, but can also go games without making contact.

 

Ryan Freel- Love his hustle and intensity, gotta question his durability though. Great as a utility role, not sure he can last as an everyday player.

 

Ken Griffey Jr.- On the downside of his career. If he can stay healthy he still is just as valuable to this team as any other player. Also has the ability to change the game with one swing.

 

Josh Hamilton- IMO the face of the franchise. Young, 5-tool player that just seems to get it. This kid needs to play every single game, and hit in the 3-5 range. Has a cannon for an arm and is very good defensively.

 

 

Does that sound like a solid offense to you? Not too promising if you ask me.

Just returned from the game as well, Javier almost got gunned at the plate it appeared...did any of you guys see that? Was he just not hustling or what? I know the outfielders were playing close, but he should have been safe by a mile.

sounds pessimistic to me... why not let Eddie play every day? he makes some bad E's in the field but he can be an all star potentially, and we have no better option... Phillips hit .290 last year.. why can't he do it again? Dunn, Griff, Freel and Hamilton as a rotation of 4 outfields are probably one of the best quartets of outfielders in the NL, if not the entire league. Hatteberg and Conine provide good at bats and leadership. Gonzalez was one of the leading batting averages on the team last time I checked... we have significant problems at catcher....

Who in the lineup scares you if you're a pitcher? There's no one there that is both a solid contact and power hitter. It's one extreme or the other. It's a lineup of a bunch of average players.

There has been a major focus change to pitching and defense at the expense of 13-10 games every night. I think it's funny you have the book on every player on the team after under 3 weeks. E-5 is in a bad slump but that's not how he will play over 162 games. BP is a very solid offensive option and it's time for him to grow in to a top of the line up hitter. It doesn't happen over night. Sure Dunn K's a lot but how many 40 HR/100RBI/100 walk/near 1.000 OPS guys are out there? Do you really think teams just look over this guy? Get real. Ross isn't very good. I said it last year, and it's showing more and more every day. I'll give you that. Zambrano said a few days ago that the Reds were as tough 1-8 to pitch to as anyone. I think he knows what he's talking about. This team has the same problem as it did from game 1 last year. When they swing early and often they aren't very good. When they show patience they can beat anyone. The truth (as I said last year) is you do with the Reds what you hate others doing to your favorite teams. You over analyze to make your point. It's pretty weak...
