I am afraid that cannot be the #1 priority in any case. If running the program was the #1 priority, they would pay a coach 40,000 dollars to coach and not teach like college.

 

As far as getting a coach from a big school or a small school. I would have to say that for a school like Montgomery who like #10rules stated is trying to get the regional tourney, has a great athletic base,etc you definitely need to seek an applicant with credentials. Potentially good coaches are exactly what they are, chances. You dont want to take a chance on a coach who is filling the shoes of a guy who has coached for 20+ years and has a brand new facility and you are trying to make a run at the title. You simply need someone who has been there and can win immediately. Taking a chance on a guy comes when you are down and out and you just need to go out on that limb. In Montgomery co's case you dont need to go out on any limb when you arent even in the tree!!!

I think you take a chance on any coach outside of maybe the top 10 or 15 proven coaches in the state. Greisser is a great candidate. Ive heard very good things about him.

All of those guys are good candidates. I dont think you can go to a small school to replace a guy like Coach Rison at Montgomery Co. Replace great with great eventually the program will be down then you can take a chance on a guy, who knows maybe he can bring you back up, but you cant take a chance when you are running at the ring, IMO.

I've said earlier though. There is a lot of basketball knowledge in that school and many people who know what is good for the kids, the question is, what will their criteria be for hiring the new coach?

What if those that are the experienced ones haven't ever had success as a head coach? Would it still be considered a "chance" if they've never had success...I feel like that's the same as being an assistant coach. That said, go with the Assistant that's won at all levels.

I totally agree you can't replace greatness like Coach Rison with a small school experienced coach. You must replace greatness with greatness...Griesser has won a National Championship with Georgetown College and a State Championship with Scott County, things like that don't just happen by coincidence.

This in my opinion would not be a "chance" he is a PROVEN WINNER.

I have to retract my statement in an earlier post about Griesser as well. He MIGHT be the #1 candidate right now. Only time will tell. I expect to hear something VERY soon.

I was told Hatcher was close to retirement and Montgomery wants someone who is going to be there for more than 5 years. Makes sense.
