Who the teams to beat in the 12U D-1 tournament?

Somerset's, quick guard play and 3 point shooting can keep them in any game. A lot of people think, they have one of the best rising PG in the state.

I would say the Ville is the favorite in the D-1 tourney. Although all of the teams entered are strong including G-Town Thunder who have stepped up their game and moved up. I would think this will be fun to watch and I expect to catch a couple games during breaks.

On the D2 12U side, yes the Somerset Future have a very strong PG, he is one of the best at his age and I loved the way they spread the floor when you go man against them. Basically saying, ok, you wanna go man, my pg is going to spread you out, drive and either pull up or dish to 2-3 players waiting at the perimeter to bury Three's. This is how they beat us in last year's state tourney, excellent point guard play and they hit almost every three they shot.

I still think they will have trouble with the Storm and their size if they meet. The tall kid for the Louisville STorm is very smooth and polished and the other big kid they have takes up a lot of space. Their guards can knock down shots also. Somerset from what I remember was not very deep at all but with the PG they have and the way they shoot, those are two excellent attributes to have at this age. Rebounds wont matter if their shots are tinkling the twine.

Don't count out some of the NKY teams either, the NKY Nets have nice size and can physically take you out of the game. The Pacers have always had a strong team also.

qryche11, if you don't mind me asking. What team do you coach.

I coach spring Ball but not winter ball. My son is on the NKY Rockets and we have played a lot of teams in the tourney. Somerset was probably the most sound team we played in the last 3 yrs. I believe they advanced to the elite 8 of the National D2 tournament last year as well.

Thanks, We play at the BCI, a lot in Florence, I don't think we played the NKy Rockets. I know we have played the Kings, Pacers, Nets and NKy. Tar Hills. Their some good northern Ky teams in the state tournament.

I looked at the pools and Somerset and Louisville storm if they get top seed out of pool play will meet in the upper bracket in D2. Someone will have to leave early.

CCKings have a good pool, NKY Rockets feel really good about their pool as well but will have to earn top seed in order to avoid Louisville Storm in bracket play who will likely take their pool. That is no disrespect to the Pacers/Letcher or Star Sports because I havent seen them but I have seen the Storm and they are very good.

HOOPDR give me some scoop on Richmond Stars as they are in our pool. We know the Swarm.

Richmond has a sound ball club. They placed in a super regional last year and participated in the DII Nationals last year.

They have 2-3 big kids that can play and 2 very good guards.

Hope this helps and good luck. I plan on watching a couple Rocket games if I get a chance. I will be "bouncing" back and forth (no pun intended) from the Sweet 16. PM me if you need more info, I will be leaving for Lex in the morning.

Who will be some rising players and match ups to watch this weekend.

Sat. morning at 10:00 am will be a big game, The Ville and Tar Hills.

Just got back from the STate Tourney, what a fun weekend. NKY Rockets didnt go as far as we had hoped but the boys had fun and it was a good experience. Highlights from Friday evening and Saturday.

1. Watching the Ville play. Even though I have a hard time believing they are of age, I was very impressed as they looked like Sophomores in high school.

2. Mt. Thunder buzzer beater over Lex Ice.

3. Pacers taking Louisville Storm to OT and losing by 1 pt. I feel for the Pacer Center who was on the line shooting bonuse with 1 sec left and down by 1pt. He is a fine player.

4. Georgetown Thunder looked very good, Mason Monroe is a very good guard who was on fire and they had their big fellas playing very well also.

5. Anthony Goral from Louisville Storm was very dominant.

The Rockets went 2-2, had hoped to sweep their pool play to avoid playing the top seed in bracket play but lost to Richmond Stars 62-51. Richmond was a very enthusiastic team who has a verrrry nice player in #4 not sure of his name. Very athletic and had 28 pts.

Rockets defeated Mason Co on Friday night 52-46 in a decently played game. Lost to Stars on Sat and blew out Bullitt Storm 59-34 in pool play. Had to face the Louisville Storm in bracket play as they were the top seed of their pool. Its ashame they felt the need to play down as they are a true D1 team playing D2 basketball. The Rockets hung tough for a half but the final was 61-42 in the end. A better showing this time then the Georgetown tourney when they lost by 30. Storm is a very good team, Goral down low is extremely good on the block and can handle the ball very well for a 5'10 kid. Their guards were knocking down 3's when we were doubling Goral. They are all good shooters.

I need some updates on todays games as we left this morning to come home. Bracket play saw these matchups.

Somerset vs. Pacers

Louisville Storm vs. NE KY

Kings vs. ?

?????? fill me in if anyone has the details.

D1 tourney I saw a few games. The Ville seemed to be the strongest. If I had to rank upon what I saw from all teams I would say this.

The Ville

Gtown thunder

Rising Stars

Tar Heels

Lex Trotters

Just returned home from KBA, fantastic weekend. Saw games from 9:00 on this morning. Watched L'ville Storm and NEKY Royals this morning and frankly, thought these were 2 of the 3 teams to beat. Royals up after 1st, tied at half, up 2 in the 3rd and tied w/around 4 min to go and the Storm drained 4 3's and the Royals couldn't recover. Both very solid teams. I have a friend who has a boy for the Royals and payed special attention to them I suppose, but they blew through their pool and were up 20 to start the 2nd half in the first round tourney game vs. Central Ballers when the Ballers coach lost his mind on a foul call and got 2 technicals/ ejected/ wouldn't leave the floor and the officials called the game after less than 1 minute played in the 3rd. Disappointing for those kids indeed. But again, the Royals are solid and seem to be very well coached. The Storm has a complete game also, with 2 big kids on the interior, but even more dangerous on the outside, but in the end, the reigning D2 champs Somerset prevailed over the Storm in the semis and were equally solid in the finals to win it again. Congratulations to a well coached team and it appears KY will be well represented in the nationals with several of those teams receiving bids. What a fun weekend of AAU basketball.
