The Thunder were led by Monroe, McFarland and Strong throughout the whole tournament. These three had an excellent tournament and proved they could play with anyone. Portwood has not been the same since the ankle injury. He only came back a week before nationals so he had some rust and was not his usual self. We lost the first game by 5 but we were up 15 points to start the game. We won the second game, a team from Orange County California by 24 and lost the 3rd game in pool play in overtime by 3 after leading the whole game to the Cincy Allstars. We beat Newport News Vikings, Virginia Rapids and the Cincy Tigers before running out of gas against the Prince William Pacers who won the classsic Bracket. We were back in forth and tied 36-36 at the end of the 3rd qtr. Unforced tournovers and Shots that just wouldn't fall Hurt us in the end as we were outscored 19-6 in the fourth quarter. But most of those were garbage points as we emptied the bench with a little over minute to go in the game and the Pacers kept playing their starters. Overall it was a great time and experience and we will be better for it. We just came up a little short, 1/2 of a quarter to be exact from medaling and qualifying for next year. There were some unbelievable 12 & 13 year olds there counting grade exceptions and some that looked 15/16 years old. We did get to watch the Tarheels and the Ville and supported them when they played. The Ville lost a heartbreaker in a great game aginst OBC. We got to see the Texas Titans and the Ice Coached by Antonio Davis in a great game that resembled a great High School game. The Fast Track Team Orlando was impressive and was my pick to win it all but was beaten by the Champions Houston Defenders. We practiced with the Orlando team and they had a center 6'4" and a 6'2" point guard slam dunking the ball insanely in practice. The Houston Defenders asst coach was Dirk Minniefield and he had a son on the team. The 2nd best game we saw was The Defenders and SAC from Ft. Wayne who is coached by James Blackmon whose son also plays on the team.

Two UK guys on the sidelines in this matchup. It was funny because we spoke to them both in the same restaurant after the opening ceremonies. James was really nice as he brought his whole family over to introduce them to us before he left. Also Corliss Williamson coached The Arkansas Hawks as his son played also. The opening ceremony was great also as the President of the Michael Jordan Line spoke to all the kids. Overall we left there with a winning record.

On a side not I will be catching a few games in Lexington for the DII Nationals. Good luck to all the KY teams!

All-Star Games

July 21, 2007

Cincinnati, Ohio

David Lowery hosted an outstanding event bringing together some of the top players in the class of 2013 from the States of Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. The first-year event was sponsored by Sports Reach, a Christian-based organization, and held at the Lakota Freshman School in West Chester, Ohio. In terms of the structure of the event, each state put together a 12-man roster (14 from Ohio) and each team played a morning round robin session followed by bracket play in the afternoon to determine the overall champion.

Team Indiana blew through pool play with double digits wins over both Team Kentucky and Team Ohio. Team Kentucky, the eventual winner of the tournament, did not win a game in the round robin pool play losing to Team Ohio by 2pt 51-49 in the first game of the day. Team Indiana had a core group of four players they played most of the day substituting one or two players at a time around them. Ohio and Kentucky substituted freely (playing a different five every 3 to 5 minutes) in the round robin session giving all the players playing time.

Team Kentucky team settled on a core group of about eight during bracket play while still giving the others on the team some clock here and there. Ohio continued it’s liberal substitution pattern all day, which is probably why they had an early exit. Kentucky beat the Ohio squad in the first game of bracket play 59 – 43 and even though they played one more game then the Indiana team it was a fresher Kentucky squad who outlasted the Indiana team in the championship game 69-65.

Players that stood out:

All the teams brought powerful squads with each player entering the game showing why he was selected. I didn’t see any bad players in the bunch, but like always there are a few players who stand out.

Team Kentucky - The leader of the Kentucky team had to be Jason Hatcher #1, the 6’2 low post power player from the ‘ville” played like a man amongst boys. He dominated the paint grabbing both offensive and defensive rebounds while showing he had a soft touch from the free throw line.

James Quick #5 (Playmakers) proved to be a true Kentucky thoroughbred often times out racing the other teams defenders down court to score in a variety of ways. His none stop play on both ends of the court was a joy to watch.

Larry Morton #11 (the ville 7th) showed why he was selected to play up on a “ville’s” team who finished 4th at nationals. Morton’s size at 6’1, ball handling and crafty drives to the basket caused teams problems all day.

Mason Monroe #6 a 5’5 guard from the (Georgetown Thunder) proved to be the difference in the championship game. Monroe’s strength, outside shooting ability, drives to the basket and touch from the free throw line cemented Kentucky championship victory.

Team Indiana

The Indiana team may have had the most talented players at the event but in my opinion it was fatigue that cost them the championship. Indiana was led by Zavier Turner #3 5’6 pg. (Indy LNO). Turner showed everything, displaying incredible basketball I.Q.; ball handling, shooting from inside/outside, and defensive plays. Turner is the type of player that when he steps out to the floor all the others on his team are immediately 3 – 5 pts better.

Michael Rogers #7 6’1, (SAC). Rogers, Mr. Inside was the only other player at this event who cold match Hatcher’s rough & tough inside play. Rogers showed an outstanding leaping ability and good ball handling skills that made him a force around the basket.

The Scott twins Benton and Bryson 5’9, (SAC) completed the core group of four that Team Indiana’s coaching staff relied on. This pair has the size, quickness, ball handling and scoring ability from both the inside/outside to play at the highest college level. Others who also played well for the Indiana squad are: #4 Daveon Balls, #5 Tony Willis and #11 Kris Hampton.

Team Ohio

Team Ohio never really settled on a core group so it was tough to evaluate their players in a team setting, but it wasn’t hard to tell who had skills. Topping the Ohio list are #8 Martin (OBC), #11 Cliff Bussy (OBC) and #12 Austin Grimes (Knigths). They showed they could score and rebound in the paint. Martin was very active on the boards keeping the ball alive to help create second shots for others, while Grimes’ height made it tough for opponents to get off any uncontested shots. Bussy also battled on the boards but it was his ability to get shots off around the basket that caught my eye.

Others who played well are: #2 Antonio Woods, #4 Antonio Kynard, #5 Stedman Lowry, #7 Tyrone Whitehead, #9 Austin Adams, #10 Evan Jansen, #13 D’erius Wingfield and #14 Dawson.

Thanks to my long time friend and fraternity brother James McFarland for covering the event for the Buckeye Prep Report. For a more event coverage visit http://www.cincyassaualtbasketball.com.

That was a great post. I meant to ask you about this tournament the other night when I saw you at the Summer league game and forgot. Watching Mason Monroe play is a lot of fun and he will be a special player for the P C Wildcats. He sees the floor so well, makes lightning passes and plays with great control. Glad to see he stepped up in this tourney. The Vill players sound like some major studs who will probably keep growing and have great high school careers as well.
