I've also heard this and if it's true the team should no doubt move up to d2, somerset should also move up after dominating the tounry the last two years.

 

I had heard that Somerset was planning on playing D1 this year until there big man broke his arm and was out for the season. I would expect them to play D1 next year.

Uncle Joe great post on the D-1 teams. I agree Hatcher, Hicks, Portwood, Robinson and Mc Farland great bigs. I really think all these bigs have a great up side in the future. Hatcher was a man child on the boards for the Ville. Portwood and Mc Farland played very well for the Thunder. Hicks and Robinson run the floor great for bigs. "Guard play" Lowery, Sanders, Monroe, Clay, Jones and Hatton all these guards can play the game. Monroe, Hatton and Lowery can shoot great. Lowery, was on fire in the Tar Hill and Ville game making NBA 3 pointers. Missed a shot at the end of the game. Which could have sent the game in to over time. Clay and Jones, quick off the dribble. They can get to the hole fast. Sanders, strong off the dribble great handles and See's the floor great. I must throw in Grover, PG from the Somerset (40 points one game) what can you say! May be what an exciting future for KY High Basketball. I would take this team and go to war and play any one in the country. Sorry, if I left any one out please let me know.

Lowry is a Lakota kid from Cincinnati so he won't be playing KY High school basketball. Hatton is repeating the 5th grade this year. He has NBA range but he will need to grow in order to get those off in high school. He has great basketball instincts and should be able to make up for lack of footspeed. Monroe handles the ball well, shoots very well and is strong. Pendleton Co will enjoy having him around in the future. McFarland was a former Lex Trotter but he runs the floor like a deer and is long, very long. Portwood is a workhorse as well. Gover is the best PG I have seen in this state in both the 6th and 7th grade level. He will be a starter on Somerset's Varsity in the near future.

 

I also want to add that it was a very good showing from NKY teams in this year's tournament.

 

NKY Flash- Mark Ogle's team beat the Louisville Truth at the buzzer on a 3-ball. They were very undersized and scrapped well. They won some ballgames as well as the NKY Firehawks, NKY Rockets, NKY Nets (runner up d2), Cambpell Co Kings (final four). NKY Pacers looked very good winning some games and taking Louisville Storm to OT. It looks like there were more teams from the NKY area than other major cities. This bodes well for the future of NKY high school ball. I know most of the geographical region was represented well.

Grover and Sanders is the two best PG in the Southern end of the state 6th or 7th grade. Grover lead Somerset this year to a 1 loss in their 6th grade Middle School season. Their only loss was to South Laurel's 6th grade team. Sanders lead South Laurel 6th grade to a 40-1 season. Their only loss was to the 6th grade Somerset team. South Laurel did take a loss to GT Thunder in tournament play in Florence back in November. South Laurel and Somerset played good competition out side their school schedule.

Although I did not get to observe as much of the D2 state as I would have liked to, I do want to point out some of the top performers that I did witness and some of the teams that I was impressed with.

First, I will start with the D2 state champions the Somerset Future. This middle school team (Meece Middle) doesn't look like they can play, but when they start the game this team will lite you up before you know what happened.They don't have a lot of size, but there guard play is phenomenal. The point guard Gover is the best PG in the state period. He can flat out play. He scored 40 points in the quarter final game against the N. Ky Pacers. The shooting guard #23 Dishman (5th grader) set the 12U state record for 3 pointers for the tournament (according to Sean Vissel). I would like to know what his shooting percentage was because it seemed like he never missed.

The N. Ky Nets are also a very talented team. They were big at every position. I did not get the names of there two big men, but #25 is a talented player and #32 also had a nice tournament. #25 has a nice jump shot from the elbow. If they combine with the Campbell Co. Kings, this will make a very competitive team.

The two best big men in the D2 tournament played for the Louisville Storm. The PF #32 Goral is one of the better players in the state. He has nice moves and can handle the ball. At times he would play the point for the Storm. The center #34 Yates was also tough to stop. These two player make up 75% of the Storms offense and carried them to the semi finals.

The Campbell Co. Kings get my vote for the most improved team in the D2 tournament. Congratulations on their semi final appearance. They took the Nets to overtime before lossing by 7.

The N. Ky Pacers had a nice performance in pool play against the Lou Storm. They were down by almost 20 in the 4th quarter before rallying to take the Storm to overtime. This would have been a big upset.

My vote for the biggest upset was the N. Ky Flash over the Lou. Truth. I did not get to see this game, but when I saw the score I took a double take.

I was also impressed with the Northern Kentucky teams. The 9th Region should be very competitive when these boys get to high school.

I am sure there were other performances worth mentioning that I did not get to see, so feel free to give them their props.

I also feel that the class of 2013 is one of the most talented I have seen from top to bottom. Many good players and many good teams.

I heard they had 15 3pt's in their 1st pool game through only 3 quarters. They do not look like an impressive team but are very well coached and the kids are fundamentally strong.

The Nets have some nice size and their Center #25 does have a very nice shot at the elbow. He was wearing Ryle sweats last I saw him. Max Nussbaum is another player on the Nets who is big and strong and takes it to the hole wiht force. He is a future Beechwood player.

The Kings did play well and have been playing well over hte last month. Nathan McGovney is huge for them, he is one of the best Power forwards I have seen in the state. Long and agressive and can take on double and triple teams. I belive he will be a future Camel. Ben Uebel is a solid point guard who IMO should shoot more. Future Brossard Stang, see older brother Jimmy Uebel. Saunders is a deadey shooter when open but too passive on offense. If he can get more aggresive he can be a nice compliment to McGovney. They are a Big Man away from a D2 Championship. Their merger with the Nets will almost gurantee them a D2 STate Championship run next year.

NKY Flash are well coached and very pesky. Not the best shooters but all the kids are athletic and never stop.

They had the ball in regulation with 22 seconds left and tie game and they didnt hold it for a final shot. Their guard jacked up a 3pter for some reason and the STorm got one more chance. Not smart ball but still a valiant effort by the team.

I gotta throw some props out to my Rockets as well. These boys are all battlers and 1-10 are solid. Several good guards who can all shoot the ball well. Witte,Whitford,Dupont,Christian,Turner,Graves,Seidl all future Highlands players and Collopy,Beuter,Devoto future NCC Breds all played well. Just ran into some questionable officiating and a very talented Richmond Stars Player.

Usually Final Four of all Divisions. However, there are enough tournaments through the year that are qualifiers where other teams can get bids. Some tournaments you can not even win a game and get a bid simply due to lack of teams entering.

Sean from KBA said that there were 10 bids available to them from the amt of teams playing in the State Tournament last week. Top 8 and 2 at large bids.

The Firehawks went 2-1 down in Maysville and lost their last game by 3 without their starting point guard. It was a small tournament but they played well and had a lot of fun.

That is the week after 12U State tourney at KBA.

All I can say is: There was some "major" Hoops going on in Columbus this past weekend. There were 12 teams in our division and a total of 104 teams in the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th grades.

Thunder went 2-1 on Saturday In pool play defeating All-Ohio and Dayton Nets by 20 plus and Lost to Team Tempo in a back and forth game until the end and lost by 20.

They advanced out of Pool play and played Fist Express defeating them by

10 or 11 points. This set up the semifinal matchup with the Cincinnati Knights

Who were Huge...alot of height. This game was a classic back and forth

ask and answer basketball. The game was tied at the half 21-21. Second half was the same as both teams put together runs of leads of 4-6 points.The Knights had a two point lead with 6 seconds left. The Thunder got a good look for a three and the win and the ball hit the back of the rim and came out. Game over Knight's escape with ahard fought 2 point Victory.

OBC/Showstoppers came from behind to defeat Team Tempo in the other Semifinal with The Knights capturing the Title.

Georgetown was shorthanded with only 8 players making the trip up north.

the team played extremely well and impressed a lot of people at the tournament. There were a lot of scouts there that took notice of the team.

Braxton McFarland made the all tournament team. He had a super tournament along with Portwood,Young, Monroe And Crisp. The bench Page, Gilkey and Morris also played very well and had huge key moments. They really could of used the big man Strong but he wasn't available this weekend.

Overall the coaches were very pleased this weekend and they came up just 2 points short of making the championship. I never seen so many big "huge" 7th, 8th and 9th graders put on a thunderous dunking display. Backboards shaking. I think this tournament will prepare them for the State 13U D2 tournament later this month.

The Thunders showing in the BPR is very impressive! It shows that Ky basketball is competitive with the rest of the nation. The teams you lost to are two of the better teams nationally.
