He can't, he's still under contract to the Steelers.

Rooney said Tomlin doesn't plan to coach in the near future.

For a frugal guy he sure spent some bucks on Burrow, Chase, Higgins, and Hendrickson. Henridrickson earned a little over SIX MILLION a game, correct. NFL and College teams do a lot less in person scouting with the advent of high tech video systems and the combine.

Bingo today's NFL is a quarterback driven league more than at any other time. The question for the Steelers will be is Will Howard the guy at quarterback or will he be Kenny Pickett #2. The Steelers have not had a top tier since Big Ben. Tomlin took them each year as far as they could go without that stud quarterback. If Howard is the guy they can contend for the AFC title if he is not the best they could hope for is what they have been. 

Look for them this year Burrow missed half of the year. Jackson was out and not right when he came back and Mahomes and the Chiefs were not relevant and for them it still had to come down to the last game of the season and a missed FG to even advance to the playoff. In the playoffs they lost by 24 points to the Texans whose quarterback had 3 terrible turnovers.

Finally look at the teams in this year's playoffs again not even counting Mahomes, Jackson, or Burrow they consist of two 2nd year QB's (Nix, May) three others still in their prime (Stroud, Lawrence, Herbert). Then you have a top 3 quarterback in the league in Allen, then you had 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers who the Texans made to look his age. If the Steelers are going to be a contender to win the AFC they have to decide if they think Howard is the guy or they need to dump some of the high salary old guys on defense or trade and go out and get a top tier QB through free agency or by trade.

Adam Thielen today announced that he is retiring from the NFL. Best of luck to him he had a nice career.

Just posted online by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's by Gerry Dulac that the Pittsburgh Steelers are taking another step towards having a virtually clean house in the coaching department next season.

Widespread change was expected once Mike Tomlin stepped down as head coach following the team's playoff elimination at the hands of the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round, but there was some thought that the organization would prioritize keeping some of his assistants as it sprung into its head coaching search.

The Steelers have told all of Tomlin's assistants that they can go after other openings considering they won't remain with the team unless the next head coach makes a push to retain them.

The Steelers have told all of Mike Tomlin’s assistant coaches they are free to pursue other opportunities and won’t be retained unless the new head coach wants to rehire them, per multiple sources," Dulac wrote on X. "All coaches are under contract through the end of February.

I believe he was ready to retire.

Of course it doesn't I think it was with what he had given the organization he deserved to be able to go out like that. If he was truly ready to retire he won't be taking another job this year or next.

I have not saw anything where Tomlin said he is retiring.  Stepping down and retiring is two different animals.

He would have stayed if he was going to keep coaching. 19 years is along time.

He can't go unless the team he wants to go to will trade for him. The Steelers own his rights.

I think personally that the Steelers job is at best the 4th or 5th best open job for some of these reasons:

1) No QB

2) 2nd oldest team in the NFL. Plus they will be another year older next year.

3) Highest paid defense in the NFL.

A positive is that they have one of the best and most stable ownerships in the league. It will be interesting to see who gets the job. The old saying don't ever follower a legend be the one who followers the one who replaced the legend. We have a recent example of just this in New England.
