As much as I love Beechwood football, I truly hope that all came from private funding.

From my understanding, it was included in the construction budget.

The Queen vs Harney is such an interesting twist to this game. Former grade school classmates until 7th grade. Add in both starting at the opposite school they're playing for currently and in different grades after the reclass.

I hope all can stay healthy in this game, it's sure to be a great one.  Can't wait to see the Colonels in their Braveheart gear!

Is the press box still the size of a dorm room closet? The last time or two we played there our coaches were sent out on the steps because there wasn't any room inside for them. And the Beechwood coaches were sitting pretty on the 2nd floor of that big field house.

I see this game as a NO win for CCH. If they beat Beechwood you get the whole, "You are bigger school you should win". If we lose you would think Beechwood fans won the lottery. Saying they beat the bigger school.

We will see how Queen handles a team that can pressure him this week.

I can understand what you're saying, but with the caliber of program that Beechwood is, I don't feel that way personally. First off, look around NKY at who we have to play....Beechwood is easily one of the best competitors in the region. Year in and year out they're easily a tougher team than Dixie and Simon Kenton, but nobody questions those teams being on our schedule just because those schools are 5A and 6A.

The KHSAA has a free-pass for either one or two games (can't remember which it is) against lower-class competitors where they won't apply the classification step-down RPI multiplier. So this game isn't hurting us at all. And if we were to drop Beechwood from the schedule and go across the river, then the KHSAA punishes us with their generic (and lazy) .53 RPI rating for ALL out-of-state competition, so that is literally hurting our RPI to play out of state, which hurts us come playoff time.

So our option is one of the following:

1.) Play Beechwood. A quality team that's literally THE nearest football program to our school.

2.) Don't play Beechwood and add another out-of-state game to the schedule (we already have two out-of-state games on the schedule this year). Those games are 100% guaranteed to hurt our RPI even if we win against a REALLY good team.

3.) Don't play Beechwood and find some other NKY team to play. Unless that other NKY team is Cooper or occasionally Conner, then 99% of the time the team we're going to play isn't going to be as good as Beechwood is.

4.) Don't play Beechwood and drive an hour or more down into Kentucky to find a challenging competitor. Scott County is probably the nearest consistently good team to fill in that blank. But what if their fans get grumpy about Coach McKee scheduling Cov Cath, the smaller school? South Oldham has had some solid seasons on occasion. They're also from a higher class, so why would they want to play a smaller-class team like us? Regardless, looking out of town for a game basically means we're more than likely looking for a Louisville or Lexington team to replace an annually solid game against a good competitor that's LITERALLY two and a quarter miles down the road.

I'd pick option one, every time.

Also, this game is one of the most exciting rivalry nights of the regular season for the kids from BOTH schools. I've got 4 nephews at Cov Cath right now...drove 3 of the 4 back from the Elder game and they were already talking about being excited for the Beechwood game then...literally three weeks ago. That kind of excitement is hard to come by when it comes to high school kids, and it's not just coming from my 3 nephews, either. There are a LOT of kids who get REALLY excited about this game. If high school sports are honestly about the kids, do we really wanna disregard that because we've got some grumpy adults saying, "Grrrrr, I don't want to have to play a team that's classified below us, grrrr!"?

Talked to the new Super on Friday about the new construction and it wasn’t even half of that number.

He also said all three fields (softball, baseball and football) are getting brand new press boxes, including new bleachers for softball and baseball, as well as many other outdoor improvements on campus.

The athletic complexes are going to look like a college campus when it’s done! Can’t wait.

Agreed on all counts.  A couple of your district opponents stink, so you have to balance it somehow.   Playing the best NKY teams seems like the best option.

SK often takes a lot of heat for scheduling BW.  It’s a long drive for them to even find another 6A team, most likely a drive to the ‘ville.

Nothing wrong with playing the best in the neighborhood, and maybe developing a great rivalry or two along the way.   And as always, preparing your team and your players for an extended postseason run is the ultimate objective.

Per the final score thread from the Beechwood vs. Simon Kenton game, Beechwood will evidently be playing this Friday without senior RB/LB Brody Aylor, and with senior kicker Colson Lair out injured (from the Dixie game, it appears?) the Tigers will be relying on freshman kicker John Mercer for kickoff/field goal/PAT duties.

Beechwood is playing without their #1 rusher/#3 tackler on Friday, and they're also playing without their starting kicker who put 4 of their 5 kickoffs into the endzone against us last year (his other kickoff was to the 1 yard line). Taking away Dylan Gaiser on kickoff returns is definitely a valuable tool to have in the toolbox - especially when you also happen to have your own returner who ran two kickoffs back for touchdowns against us last year.

I feel like that leans hard in Cov Cath's favor to win, although Beechwood definitely managed to pop us in the mouth and put us on our heels the last time we played in Fort Mitchell. They were up 21-0 on us like 2/3 of the way through the first quarter and we didn't take the lead until end of the third quarter.

Does anyone have an update on the Lair injury?

He is an outstanding high school kicker.  It’s not often that a kicker in high school can be considered a weapon, with his long kick offs helping the team with field position and long/accurate FGs helping the team with play calls as they approach the red zone.

I believe he is talented enough to play at the next level.  Does anyone know if he intends to kick in college?

Beechwoods is streaming the game!

In HS football kickoff into end zone is a tremendous asset.  BW has a very accurate young backup kicker.  But his leg strength will come as he grows.  Giving up field position on short kickoffs will be a huge factor.

I played in it, I know how great it is. You make great points and I agreee with them. I just wish the parents would realize it is about the kids. They'll tell the kids all all the stuff that makes me dislike this game at times. I experienced it.

Taking a trip in the way back machine, we at Beechwood always loved playing CovCath in anything.  We knew we were up against superior talent (most if not all the time) but it didn't matter.  Bring it on!
