Averaging 40 yards per kick, it would take a punter exactly 101 kicks to punt a football from Covington Catholic High School to Beechwood High School. The more you know....

Friday night will be the 45th installment of the Colonels versus Tigers football rivalry, with Cov Cath heading south down Dixie Highway to Beechwood. The two schools are mutually one another's closest rivals, as the crow flies, in addition to the fact that they both lie within one another's traditional school districts with dozens of Cov Cath's students residing within the safety of the Fort Mitchell ramparts.

Beechwood, the defending 2A state champs, have continued their roll from the 2024 season with three straight wins to start off the 2025 season, extending their overall win-streak to thirteen games. The Tigers' last loss - their only of the 2024 season - dates back to September 20th of last year when Beechwood lost 49-28 to Covington Catholic in Park Hills during Week 5. This year Beechwood has started off with three commanding wins, beating 1A New Cath 53-6, then beating 5A Dixie Heights 48-7, and last week beating 6A Simon Kenton 45-6.

One of the interesting storylines of this game is the fact that both starting quarterbacks have seen time on the field as varsity quarterbacks for the opposing team. Beechwood QB Emmett Queen, a junior, was the varsity backup for Cov Cath last year. Cov Cath QB Cash Harney, a senior, was the varsity backup for Beechwood during his freshman year, starting for the Tigers in their first 5 regular season games during the 2022 season while sophomore QB1 Clay Hayden recuperated from an injury. Harney even earned a state championship ring with Beechwood in '22.

Queen has been putting on a show during his first season in Fort Mitchell, passing for 795 yards and 10 touchdowns in his first three starts. Junior WR Nathan Pabst leads the Tiger offense in yardage and scoring with 16 receptions for 376 yards and 4 touchdowns, plus another 40 yards and 2 touchdowns on 11 carries rushing. Junior WR Tyler Fryman, a Louisville baseball commit, has 14 receptions for 294 yards and 4 touchdowns, plus another 126 yards and 1 touchdown on 6 carries rushing. Senior RB Brody Aylor has added another 128 yards rushing on 21 carries. And in the "speed kills" conversation, Pabst, Fryman and Aylor have all been clocked at 20+ MPH during their games this season. On the defensive side of the ball, junior MLB Collin Morris leads the team in tackles with 15, followed by senior DE Chase McDaniel with 14 tackles, and the LB Brody Aylor and DB Tyler Fryman both have tallied 10 tackles this season, and the Beechwood defensive unit has forced a total 7 turnovers this season (2 FF, 5 INT).

For a second year in a row Covington Catholic is coming into the Beechwood game with a 2-2 record, with a 26-20 loss to 6A Ryle in Week 1, a 28-20 loss to Elder (OH) in Week 2, and then a 62-15 win over 6A Simon Kenton in Week 3 and a 49-7 win over 5A Dixie Heights in Week 4. Cash Harney has been flexing his muscles as a passer this season, passing 43-61 for 652 yards and 5 touchdowns in his first 5 games, while once again demonstrating his wheels with another 409 yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground. In last Friday's game against Dixie, Harney even added a 63 yard receiving touchdown to his stat sheet, thus scoring touchdowns as a passer, rusher, and receiver all in the same game. Senior RB Dylan Gaiser has contributed 202 yards and 5 touchdowns on 38 carries as a rusher, plus another 117 yards an 9 catches plus 1 touchdown receiving. Gabe Weis, Donovan Bradshaw, Logan Sanning, and Spencer Clukey have all also contributed receiving touchdowns, while Sanning, Mac Cogswell, and Owen Pitzer have combined to punch in 3 more touchdowns on the ground.

The Colonels' defensive front is led by sophomore LB Cash Myers with 34 tackles, junior LB/Edge Owen Pitzer with 24 tackles, senior DB Logan Sanning with 23 tackles, senior DB Dylan Gaiser with 18 tackles, and senior LB Brady Guard with 15 tackles. Cov Cath's defensive unit has also combined to force a total 8 turnovers this season (5 FF, 3 INT).

Comparing performances between their shared opponents from this season:

Just as Burrow’s loss sucks the joy out of the Jungle this game always gives me great concern for injury.  Both teams will battle to the final whistle, hitting hard and clean.  Here’s hoping everyone comes out healthy in a truly well played game.  Tigers 28-26.

I see this game as a NO win for CCH. If they beat Beechwood you get the whol, "You are bigger school you should win". If we lose you would think Beechwood fans won the lottery. Saying they beat the bigger school.

We will see how Queen handles a team that can pressure him this week.

Harney vs Queen is fun. I think Cov Cath gets this done by 10-14.

1. Cov Cath can hang athletically on defense against Beechwood's skill group.

2. This is Queen's first real test against a quality, fast defense.

3. DL Johnny Lind has been really heating up on defense the last few weeks. I think he takes over vs a 2A offensive line.

4. There are less ways it can go wrong for Cov Cath running the ball with Harney and Gaiser 35 times vs putting it in the air a bunch.

Officiated the '85 and '86 games. Two of the best games I had the pleasure of working. Beechwood dropped a TD pass right in front of me in 85 OT. The '86 game was one of the hardest hitting games I ever worked.
